McDonald's Happy Meals Did you guys see that McDonald's has announced a change to their happy meal content? They are cutting the fry size in half and giving a small portion of apples in every meal. What do you think? Is it a positive change? Enough to make a difference? Just curious to hear your thoughts. They did this in California about 6 months ago. It makes no difference to me really. We rarely go to McDonalds and when we do it's a "treat" for the kids and I'm not worrying too much about the health content. ETA: We don't buy the Happy Meals when we go. I just get the Mini Meals for the kids and I get a Snack Wrap. We don't need the toy or the apples. If we wanted to be health conscious that day, we wouldn't have gone to McDonalds in the first place. LOL
We don't go there very often as the closest one is an hour away but my kids will be happy. They always want fries and apples lol.
my youngest pretty much only like the fries and the stupid ( i step on everyday) cheap toys LOL ill just have to buy an extra small fry now for my youngest with the happy meal:| my youngest HATES apples LOL
My kids aren't going to be happy. At all. They eat the fries first. And fast. Um, we don't really go to McDonald's to eat healthy to begin with...why not offer it as a choice?
This is us. we always get one with fries and one with apples. We don't eat there very often... once or twice a month at most, but I know people that eat there all the time. I don't know if it'll help kids not get to heavy or not. I mean, McDs was around when I was a kid and it wasn't normal to be heavy like it is now. I think it has more to do with lifestyle changes. For instance most kids have multiple types of video games to play AND a computer. I didn't have any of these things and I lived outside riding my bike and playing with the neighborhood kids. I don't think kids do that very much anymore. Mine don't because we don't have neighborhood kids. We do a lot of outside stuff, but not like I did as a kid. My kids are scrawny skin and bones though, so we don't see a problem, but at their school I'm always amazed by how many kids are just plain overweight by 8th grade. There are a couple that aren't over weight and the rest are all chubby. Makes me sad for them. Sorry... I got off on a tangent! LOL!
we don't do mcdonald's much either, and when we do, it's certainly not to eat healthy. BUT having lived in one of the poorest communities i've ever experienced, i know that a LOT of families with multiple children will take their kids there several times a week to eat - they always claim they can feed their kids more for the money at mcd's than at home. so then the problem became those kids were never getting any nutrition. so maybe this will be a good change for people who are in that situation. at least their kids will have the chance at some fresh(ish) fruit.
I haven't bought a happy meal in ages, but my boys only wanted them for the toys anyway. I guess if you want more fries, you can always buy another order of fries for the kids to share. I was on a "Big Mac" kick a few months ago before I went on Weight Watchers. I hadn't been to a McD in years, and then I went about 3 times in a week! Pretty sad! lol
We eat out maybe twice a month, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me. I think my boys will be happy about the apples though. They both LOVE any kind of fruit! I do think it's a positive change, though. Even though we don't eat out much, a lot of families do. I'm pretty health conscience, so I like to see that fast food joints are at least trying to do something positive. It's sad to see how many kids (and adults) are struggling with things like obesity, diabetes, malnutrition...I know that a few less fries and few more apples won't fix the problem, but at least it's a step in the right direction.
We are not McD's people but I do think it's good to see that they are moving in a more healthy direction. I think it's a good thing!
