Happy National Jerky Day! In case you’re curious like me: “The word “jerky” is derived from the Spanish word charqui, which came from the Quechua (a Native South American language) word ch’arki, which means to burn (meat). This nutrient-dense meat is made lightweight by drying. A pound of meat or poultry will weigh only about four ounces after transforming it into jerky. Properly prepared jerky can be stored for months without refrigeration because the drying process removes most of the moisture. Salt added to the meat before the drying process begins helps to prevent bacteria from developing.” When’s the last time you ate jerky? Any favorite jerky types or brands? Do you prefer dried meat or dried fruit? Have you ever dried your own meat or fruit?
When’s the last time you ate jerky? I wanted some last week but we were out so I just barely bought more. Any favorite jerky types or brands? Costco Steak Strips Do you prefer dried meat or dried fruit? Dried Italian plums Have you ever dried your own meat or fruit? I’ve dried plums and apricots
It's been years (decades) since I've had jerky. Lately I've been buying meat sticks from Costco ... beef and honey BBQ chicken ... can't remember the brands off hand. These meat sticks are MUCH softer than Slim Jims and even Picky Vicky (my DD) loves them.
Picky Vicky lol love it. I’m going to have to look for those at Costco because my jaw doesn’t like tough jerky.
When’s the last time you ate jerky? I might have had some meat jerky as a child. I can't remember it. Any favorite jerky types or brands? I have no interest in it. Do you prefer dried meat or dried fruit? Dried fruit is awesome. And I loved finding a jerky vendor at the Renaissance Fair a couple of weeks ago had a section they called "vegan jerky," which was some really good dried fruits. They were soft in the middle, not as dry as store-bought. They bagged some in combinations. I got the strawberry-kiwi bag. Have you ever dried your own meat or fruit? I vaguely recall making fruit leather in my own oven way back around 2005 maybe. It must not have been spectacular because I'm pretty sure I did do it, but I remember nothing about how it turned out.
I'm not brand loyal but I like jerky, honey garlic and teriyaki are my faves. I like beef or turkey. It's a good snack to bring on a road trip, I bring it along with some nuts and fruit.
That’s fun there was a jerky vendor at the Renaissance Fair! The softer dried fruit sounds delicious.
I agree it’s a good snack to bring on a road trip. I don’t know that I’ve ever tried a honey garlic variety but teriyaki is always a safe bet.
We are huge jerky fans ..my dad owns a dehydrater and we make our own using deer or burger a lot . I prefer burger over Bambi but either way it's good. I've also tried elk and Buffalo.. We had a Jerkry store in town with all kinds of animals. I prefer normal seasonings or teriyaki
That’s nice your dad owns a dehydrator. I grew up with elk jerky but I don’t think I’ve ever had buffalo jerky.
When’s the last time you ate jerky? It's been a little bit, but I used to eat a lot when my ex-husband would make deer jerky every year. Any favorite jerky types or brands? I like teriyaki flavor and perfere homemade over most brands. When I buy it, it's usually Jack Links. We had a big Jerky Outlet here but it closed a few months ago. Do you prefer dried meat or dried fruit? I prefer dried fruit, but I do like them both. Have you ever dried your own meat or fruit? I have done both...it's a long process lol
When’s the last time you ate jerky? Hmm... not sure, several months ago, maybe a year? Any favorite jerky types or brands? I love teriyaki jerky best Do you prefer dried meat or dried fruit? I like both! Have you ever dried your own meat or fruit? Yes, when I was a kid my mom had a dehydrator, so we made lots of different stuff... although, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if we tried jerky?
