Drink Up | Pad Patter 3.21.24

I am a Coke person- I started out drinking regular Coca-Cola as a teen/young adult but have now transitioned to Coke Zero. I only use the 16 oz bottles, so I can sip a bit then put the lid back on-- as our cat loves to knock everything over and I don't want to have to deal with cleaning up spilled sticky soda! My husband also likes Coke Zero, but he only wants the cans, so we keep both bottles and cans in our garage fridge. I usually have 2 to 2.5 bottles per day. Back in 2009/2010 before Coke Zero came out, I used to really like Pepsi Max, or Diet Dr Pepper Cherry Vanilla, but I don't even know if those are available anymore-- Coke Zero tastes so great to me that I haven't tried any other soda in years!

Other than Coke Zero, I drink water. I have a black metal 60 oz water bottle with a carrying strap that goes to the gym with me for all my workout classes, and I try to finish it at least once and hopefully 1.5 times per day. When I am home or out running errands, I use my 40 oz straw-lid Stanley (in a beautiful crimson red to subtly cheer on my Crimson Tide!) with water-- I try to drink 2 of those on the days I do not go to the gym. I fill both of those bottles up from my fridge water dispenser that is filtered as we have super hard water in my town. Oh- and 2 times a year I have champagne- on New Year's Eve at midnight and on our anniversary in May- but that is usually the only alcohol I drink as I take a couple prescription medications that don't react well to drinking alcohol while taking them.

Back in 1999, when I was pregnant with my oldest, the town we lived in had such bad water that it caused miscarriages and no place in town would serve tap water to anyone who looked at all pregnant-- so at that point we started buying distilled water in these big 5 gallon jugs with a spout that would fit into our fridge-- we would go weekly and get 3 of the jugs refilled. I haven't drunken distilled water in 20ish years but do use it for my iron (for steam) and whenever I pour some into the iron and smell the distilled water, I have vivid memories of those days when we had to lug the huge jugs of water from the car into the house! (That town was Chesapeake, VA-- in southeastern Virginia next to Norfolk and Virginia Beach-- I hope they have solved their water issues in the past 24 years!)
DH used to drink Coke Zero and now it’s my sister’s go-to. DH always preferred cans.

That’s crazy about your old drinking water! I’m not surprised the smell of distilled water brings back those memories. We used distilled water in our humidifiers because of our hard water.

I had even cut back from what I used to drink years ago. I once had a clerical job that we sat in a fenced in area in the warehouse to process the paperwork for the items that came in to the receiving dock. Multiple dock doors open all day long during the summer since there was no air conditioning. I worked 2nd shift in the heat of the day. I would drink 6 to 8 cans (72 to 96 oz per day) of DP per shift. Although the DP drinking slowed down during the winter because it was way too cold in there!!! At my last job before retiring, I would drink 2 bottles per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon... 32 oz since they were 16 oz bottles. I cut back to 1.5 bottles a day when I retired.

I miss my Dr Pepper!

Yep, I used to drink 6-12 cans a day a decade or so ago. I now have one in the morning (my coffee) and one after lunch (dessert). Occasionally I will have a 3rd can, but that's pretty rare.

Have you done a LO about your love of Dr. P??? I need to do one about Pepsi.

When my granddaughter went to France 15 years ago she brought me back an empty Pepsi bottle as a souvenir. She'd bought it before going thru security and had to empty it. I still have it in my china cabinet.

These days, it's coffee for me in the morning and then water with lemon the rest of the day. I gave up soda awhile ago, but I indulge every now and then and have Diet Coke. If I'm craving carbonation, I usually opt for a Celsius. My favorite non-carbonated drink is coffee, hands down. I also really like tea from time to time.

My oldest became obsessed with Horchata after he spent some time in El Paso with the Army. I'll have to ask him if he has a recipe.

I used to be a Mt. Dew fanatic, but then I stopped drinking it because my neurologist thought it might be giving me migraines (it wasn't). I love Pibb and some types of lemonade. I can't drink anything "sugar free" because I'm allergic to sweeteners (even the artificial sweetener in toothpaste). I limit what I drink, but I have realized that I need to drink something with caffeine to combat my insomnia. LOL. It's is counter-intuitive, but totally true. If I don't have caffeine, I will be awake in the middle of the night, but the days I have caffeine, I sleep through. I think it is because I'm neurodivergent and probably have self-medicated with caffeine my whole life.

I’ve been waiting for a Diet Coke fan. That seems to be very popular!

Funny thing is....when I was working at Pizza Hut for 6 years they only sold the Pepsi range which I didn't love. Made it super hard to upsell the products when I knew a) it wasn't the most popular drink by any means and b) it was in my opinion over priced.

I am the worst about what I drink daily. I start with a diet coke and sip on that most of the day. I barely drink any water and then have some red wine in the evening. It's always a goal of mine to figure out how to give up the diet coke habit and replace it with more water. I know it's the healthiest thing for me, but I really miss the carbonation.

I had to Google Horchata, never heard of it.
Because I am intermittent fasting now, it's only water from 6pm to 1pm.
I do love a cup of tea after my meals though and have cappuccino's when out at a restaurant.
I prefer to drink still water but can do sparkling if I need to sip and savour it when others are drinking wine.
I like intermittent fasting because it helps me drink more water.

I prefer still water as well. DH will get sparkling water when the rest of us get sugary sodas.

I used to drink lots of Diet Coke, but these days my drink of choice is Snapple no sugar added half tea half lemonade.
You’re the first to mention Snapple as your drink of choice. I’m not a big fan of tea but maybe I’ll try their lemonade.

Yeah I would have a hard time selling anything I don’t like.

I’m glad I’ve never loved soda so I don’t have to figure out how to give it up.

Years ago Snapple had flavors like fruit punch and grape flavors that had no tea flavoring (I do see fruit punch on their website as a flavor still). I used to drink the fruit punch a lot. But like you, I'm not fond of tea and all I can find in the stores near me are the various tea flavors. That was the first thing I thought of when I had to quit drinking pop was Snapple.

I'll definitely look for the fruit punch flavor! That sounds delicious!

I love peppermint hot cocoa too! Don’t know if I’ve tried white chocolate raspberry but I need to!

I'm a huge water drinker, it's my favorite. But, I always start my day with a couple of cups of 50/50 coffee. I'm not a soda drinker, unless water does not seem to be quenching my thirst, cuz soda usually does the job then. I luv my juice in between, as I like to get my vitamins in.

* My daughter loves horchata and always orders it when we dine at a Spanish/Mexician restaurant.

It sounds like you get a good mix of drinks. I’m glad I’m not the only one who prefers water!
