Hi reading friends! My daughter needs to read a YA romance or humor book with at least 250 pages. Any suggestions? I can’t think right now! She hates The Selection, she likes Matched and Twilight but wants something shorter so it’s faster. Thanks in advance!

Best YA book (and I'm almost sure best book ever) are The Hunger Games, but it's neither short, nor one book, since it's a trilogy. But gee ... I love them.

I like the books Rachel Cohn & David Levithan written together:
- Dash & Lily's Book of Dare
- Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
- Naomi & Ely's No Kiss List
[And now that I googled to find the English titles, I saw that there are more I haven't read.]

Sophie Gonzalez has written some good ones too, but they might be more than 250 pages. Also Becky Albertalli. Then I know people like John Green's books, but ... I hate them. He's crazy for sad endings, almost at the same level as Nicholas Sparks.

I kinda liked the Selection books and Matched but didnt exactly love twilight so not sure i'm a huge help but i can suggest a few for you to look in to as possibilities?

Same re: John Green- The Fault in Our Stars guy - i didn't exactly love the other books of his i read but his brother's one was cool (it might be in the comedy vein - let me find the link https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24233708-an-absolutely-remarkable-thing - it's 343 pages ...

Maybe Eleanor & Park https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15745753-eleanor-park - i feel like that should be on everyone's YA must-read list

If I Stay and Stargirl's are both apparently too short but there's apparently a 2nd Stargirl book as well? (they've also been made into movies, Stargirl's on the Disney channel depending on whether you want more 'young' or more 'adult'

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22232.Stargirl
Before I Fall is also in the 'good YA movie now' category but way longer and it depends on whther crying at some point in the book is ok to you as a reader... or maybe it's just me - i cried in the other two i think as well.... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30319982-before-i-fall

Happy Head is the first book i'd recommend for this whole question that springs to mind (and i didn't cry!) because i just read it over xmas but it's a first book only (so far) but is a bit Hunger Games crossed with Matched - its also LGBTQ if that is an issue - i audio'd it, i think it was 8hrs but it says it's 383pgs https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/62881326-happyhead

Oh i did love the Elemental books (better than Twilight to me and better than the I am Number Four books but same kinda thing YA paranormal really (and the girl is Becca but pretty close to Bella!) but wow it was 409 pages - i guess as an e-book i never realised how thick they were - but if she's read the tricep workout twilight books... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10401084-storm

And about the same time I quite liked the Delirium books & The Uglies (sorry i guess most of the YA i've read are series - Delirium is a bit more like Matched, Uglies has a similar premise i guess but more positive physical self-acceptance messages on top of that) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11614718-delirium
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24770.Uglies

This has 220 pages and i gave it 4.5 stars - In Real Life -standalone, i can't remember the end though but i usually don't rate cliffhangers or annoying endings so well https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21525995-in-real-life

This i gave 5 stars but i'm a science geek so it was YA love story mixed with science done really well- 272pgs also standalone https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17286818-relativity

And just in case anyone really liked Hunger Games and The Selection, i really liked The Red Queen https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22328546-red-queen

ETA: this post bought to you by Goodreads - sorry it was so long!

Has she read Divergent? Similar dystopian theme.
The Uglies I liked too. It's longer, by didn't feel that long. Definitely has positive self acceptance messages.

Ready Player One is totally different from above. It's video game based, but a fascinating thought of virtual reality versus reality. Moves pretty quickly too.

I'd suggest The Circle by Dave Eggers, but it's pretty long according to Amazon. The idea: what if a social media service controlled your life? It really made me think for awhile afterwards.

There's always the classic: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Not sure how long that is.

If you can find Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson, I'd recommend that. Think Princess Bride but with a kick butt heroine. It's 384, but reads really fast and there are some illustrations in it too.

Thanks Justine! I found Eleanor & Park last night and put it on hold. I can’t remember which Rainbow Rowell book I read before but I liked it.

I suggest Us in the moon by Alice Kellen, Love from scratch by Kaitlyn Hill, Hot dog girl by Jennifer Dugan, I believe in a thing called love by Maurene Goo, A pho love story by Loan Le, See you yesterday by Rachel Lynn Solomon, Better than the movies by Lynn Painter and Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.

Thanks Grace!

My daughter ended up finding a realistic fiction book that was enough “romance” for her teacher to accept. I’ll have to check these titles out for myself though. ;)

So glad that your daughter found a good book :perfect
Alice Kellen has a lot of romantic books. See you yesterday is little bit like Groundhog day (movie 1993).

I'm reading the limit by Kristin Landon right now with my middle schooler. It's an interesting dystopian novel with a money focus instead of physical difference.

Not what she needs for her book, but another book to add to your TBR list.

If you're still looking...I think the romance fairy tale books by Melanie Dickerson would fit this description. Clean romance based on fairytales! I've loved them all!!
Start with the Hagenheim Fairy Tale Romance Series. I actually started with The Fairest Beauty when it was published and later realized there were 2 before it :) But it read fine!!
