We’re driving to a softball tournament this weekend so let’s talk travel transportation today.

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)?
What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up?
What’s the longest drive you’ve taken?
What’s the longest flight you’ve taken?

I loved flying as a kid but haven’t flown since 2007 so I don’t know if I’d still enjoy flying. I’m okay with driving as long as it’s not more than ten hours to the destination.

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up?
My family took a lot of road trips. The only time we would fly was when we would go to Florida; everything else was “close enough” to drive.

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken?
1200 miles (I don’t know what my parents were thinking).

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken?
Flying to Hawaii from Vegas.

1) These days I'd prefer to drive. Of course, that depends on where I might be going. There is so much to see in our country when you drive that you miss when you fly. Those unexpected stops can be so much fun!
2) When I was growing up, most of our vacations were driving (Tennessee and Michigan). Even the trip to Florida when I was 16 for Christmas was one we drove. My first flight was a year later to Florida.
3) Ohio to various locations in Florida. Ft. Myers (1976 and 1980), Ft. Lauderdale (1977), Orlando (1971 and 2013).
4) Columbus, Ohio to Los Angeles with a stop-over in Phoenix (1997). 2nd longest Detroit to Las Vegas (1978)

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)? Since I don’t drive my preference is to fly if it’s longer than about 3-4 hours on a bus. I once tried to save money by getting an overnight bus for a 12 hour trip (the flight would have been 1 hour)…never again!

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? Probably being driven to places mainly with family.

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? 12 hours….see above

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken? Nearly a whole day to fly from Auckland, New Zealand to Vancouver, BC via LAX then Vancouver, BC to Auckland via Honolulu. If money wasn’t an object it would have been the 14 hour direct flight as we missed connections in LAX due to the flight being late arriving/departing New Zealand

when I was growing up, most of my travel was via buses and trains. I got my first car as I needed it for working on building sites in my mid 20s. Now we either cycle or use a car. I've only travelled by plane 4 times, the furthest was to India (about 7 1/2 thousand Km)

I prefer to drive if the drive isn't more than 5-6 hours. My son goes to college in LA and every time we visit him we have to make this decision because it's about 6 hours to drive. So, by the time you get to the airport early and deal with all the flight stuff, it isn't that much longer to drive, while driving is cheaper and then you have a car with you. So, I lean toward driving but hubby leans toward flying.

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? Mostly driving.
What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? across the country from DC to AZ
What’s the longest flight you’ve taken? Flight from Washington DC to Bali, Indonesia (layover in Tokyo) was a doozy.

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)? Depends on the length of the trip, I don't like to drive more than 4-6 hours anymore.

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? We didn't travel much, and when we did we drove 2-4 hours to the mountains or the beach.

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? San Diego, CA to DC. I flew out and then drove back across country with a friend when he mustered out of the navy. I've also driven to and from Albuquerque, NM. It takes forever to drive across Texas.

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken?
DC to Frankfurt, Germany with a plane change in London. This was my first flight and I was traveling with my 5 month old son. In London we literally had to run to catch the second plane ... another mom's little boy (3-4 y.o.) ended up peeing his pants b/c there wasn't time to use the restroom before we were rushed onto a transport bus to get to the other plane.

It takes forever to drive across Texas.

Granted I've never driven across Texas but Georgia is the one that seemed like it took forever going from Ohio to Florida. Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee just flew by then there was Georgia. Back in the 70's it took about 8 hours to get through the state since the speed limit was 55 mph.

Most of the time, if we can drive there - we will. Flying is just too much hassle: endless waiting, and security controls and then more waiting, weight limitations… then there’s the cost of flying, of course…

We drive everywhere in Europe, to the mountains or sea… crossing a couple of countries in a few hours is no big deal, but of course it all depends on where one is going.

The longest car trip was 2,100 km that took about 28 hours of pure driving time and 49 hours in total. We left in the afternoon and took turns and napped while the other was driving through the first night, but we had to stop to get some proper rest after the first 24 hours on the road.

The longest flight - one of those transcontinental red-eye flights that last 13-14 hours…. Boooooring…..

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)? It really depends on how much time I have for the trip and how far. I don't like to drive more than about 4 or 5 hours at a stretch, but have done numerous 10 hour driving days over the years. But if time is short, usually I'd prefer to fly in order to spend more time at the destination.

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? growing up, we drove

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? Longest straight through drive only stopping for gas, food, and bio breaks was Jacksonville Florida to Dallas Texas when I must have been in my young 20's. About 1000 miles - 15 hours not counting stops.
Longest drive with multiple stops Jacksonville Florida to Long Beach California about 2400 miles (this was to move across country after college graduation and getting married)

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken? I think the longest straight flight was London to Denver about 10 hours.

I do like driving to see the different cities along the way. Even though we never stop, we still get to see a lot of different places and scenery.

I’m so sorry that 12 hour bus ride was so bad Jennifer. I like to save money too so I probably would’ve done the same thing.

I think it’s great you’re able to cycle Angela. The only time I rode a city bus was to go to a water park with my friend before we were old enough to drive.

Your longest drive AND longest flight both sound like a doozy!

Your first flight sounds so stressful, especially with a five month old!

I’m very glad the speed limit is higher than 55 these days.

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)? My favorite form of transportation is my FEET. Someday I hope to live where I can use good public transportation. I can't decide whether I prefer driving or flying; there are good and bad things about both.
What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? cars
What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? In 2021, my cross country road trip totaled over 7,000 miles. It was a whirlwind 3 week trip.
What’s the longest flight you’ve taken? From Los Angeles to either Stockholm or Paris, I don't know/remember which was longer

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)? Fly!! 35 years of commuting to and from work and running kids around has really burnt me out on driving, and I love to fly!!
What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up? We drove everywhere we went. I didn't fly until I was in my late teens.
What’s the longest drive you’ve taken? I'd say probably 12-13 hours
What’s the longest flight you’ve taken? Either Greensboro, NC to Sacramento, CA or Roanoke, VA to Mexico City.

We actually have a softball free weekend this weekend- the first free one since the beginning of June! One more to go... then fall ball starts... lol! ;)

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)?
Really depends how far- airports are such a time suck these days- I'd prefer to drive if it's not too far & just get there.
I do really like to fly- but just not always feasible, as it doesn't cost us much to drive since we have electric vehicles.

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up?
We drove everywhere- all over the western United States pretty much

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken?
This summer we did a long drive to Utah & Colorado (from Washington State) for softball tourneys! We also did a giant road trip back in 2018 up into British Columbia, lake louise/banff, Calgary then down to the Canadian side of Glacier National park and then home through Glacier National Park in Montana.

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken?
Longest has really only been a few hours- maybe a lay over in texas or something.

Do you prefer to drive or fly (or something else)?
Drive - I enjoy driving for the most part. Flying is more of a hassle just getting to the airport, security, and I get so nervous if I have to check any luggage!

What mode of transportation did you use to travel when you were growing up?
We always drove - we never traveled much, I only went out of state once as kid

What’s the longest drive you’ve taken?
I drove across the country when I moved from Utah to Philadelphia

What’s the longest flight you’ve taken?
Salt Lake City to Dublin was about 12 hours.
I actually just booked a flight from San Francisco to Sao Paulo that will be about 16 hours - kind of dreading it but very excited to visit Brasil!
