Danica's thread about tea brought up a memory of me as a kid. I would spend a lot of time with my grandparents and my grandfather would make me breakfast. It was tea, crumpets, kippers and maybe an egg. Now, when I was a kid, and I'm in the US, I didn't know eating kippers was not the norm by me, lol! Years later, my friends looked at me funny, as it wasn't something they ever had for breakfast or really any other time, lol!

What was something you ate as a kid, that wasn't quite "normal" compared to what others would eat?
Or a strange way of cooking or combining foods, that is now something you really enjoy food to you?

When talking with my friends (we were in college) about strange food and what we have mixed together, there were some strange combinations... I haven't tried these... except for the normal one, haha!

    Sugar and Butter Sandwiches
    Sour Cream and Wheat Thins
    Rice and Ketchup
Oreos and Orange Juice - or Oreos and Sour Cream - or Oreos and Doritos
and Pastina with a lot of butter. (this one sounds normal to me, lol)

I used to put jelly on my scrambled eggs, but I don't know if that's super weird. We also used to eat leftover rice like cereal with milk and a little sugar. My Mom also used to make up "red flannel hash" which was corned beef hash, with beets and an egg on top. The beets turned everything red/pink. Lol.

We used to do the cold sugar and butter sandwiches too. Eww! I don't know how we ate that! I mean, we should have at least toasted the bread. :giggle

I would not touch red flannel hash! Beets. :disagree (I don't think we have a yuck emoji, lol!)
I have never heard of jelly on eggs, ever, lol!
And I can't imagine eating a sugar sandwich...

As a kid, I used to add ketchup to my mashed potatoes, then spread them flat to make "pizza." I always thought that was really weird, but I eat fries with ketchup ...

Maybe it's the whole mash thing.... haha! I use ketchup occasionally, and with fries... but never had it on mashers!

We sometimes ate yoghurt with a rusk in it as dessert. Which I now think is not that strange because I have yoghurt with weetabix for breakfast everyday. But that’s also not common in my country. Lol

I grew up eating ketchup on eggs and ketchup on tacos. I can’t think of any other weird ones. Peanut butter on hamburgers is something I tried this year and was surprised I liked it.

Ewww...Monica....peanut butter on a hamburger. I love both but not together LOL.

Talking about ketchup on stuff...as a kid I loved pancakes with ketchup instead of syrup.

I don't think I eat anything too weird now.

Ok. Ketchup on tacos and pancakes are a no from me! :giggle

I have heard that peanut butter is really good on burgers. I read that somewhere, but I don't think I'd try it. I really only like peanut butter in ice cream or in peanut butter & Jelly Sandwiches!

I had to google rusk. I might try that in my yogurt! lol! I actually like Chobani Flips... there is yogurt and then crunchy things to flip into the yogurt!

I do this. But it has to be strawberry or raspberry jelly.

Ketchup on eggs is how the rest of my family ate scrambled eggs. Ketchup on tacos - yep! Usually because tomatoes weren't in season, so it gave that tomato profile in the tacos.

Lots of things that I thought were normal I'm finding out from this thread maybe aren't so normal!

My mom always overcooked red meat, so we always dipped it it ketchup to cover the char taste. And to give it moisture. We didn't usually have BBQ sauce or A1 in the house, so we ended up using ketchup. I don't anymore though. That was more survival than flavor!
Mom also made a casserole: Ground beef, peas, Cream of soup, and topped with crushed potato chips. Not something I like, but definitely in the odd category.

Creamed Eggs on Toast: Hard boiled eggs in a béchamel sauce served over toast.
Ketchup on Kraft Dinner. My child does this too! My husband will eat mac and cheese with tomato, but not ketchup.
Poutine - American's seem to think this is weird. French fries with brown gravy and cheese.
Ritz crackers with cream cheese and pineapple.
Grilled Tuna (or Cheese) Sandwich with ketchup to dip it.
    Tamales with Cottage Cheese.
Scrambled eggs with strawberry or raspberry jelly.
Tacos with lettuce, cheese, ketchup (when there were no tomatoes).
Jello Salad? Does that fit here? Whipped Cream, Cottage Cheese, box of gelatin, fruit (usually canned & drained). My mom's favorite was strawberry gelatin with pineapple chunks or sliced bananas.

Things that sounded weird to me, but are quite tasty:
Monte Cristo Sandwich: fancy grilled ham and cheese with jam/mustard sauce.
Elote Corn: Corn on the cob with a seasoned mayo spread on it.

I can’t believe two of you eat eggs with jelly! I have never heard of that before!

Hmmm I'm not sure I've ever eaten anything really weird. I lived on cheese and mustard sandwiches as a kid/teen, and cheese puffs dipped in mustard. I think that's about as weird as I get lol.

Ritz crackers with cream cheese and pineapple sounds good. I have a kid who would LOVE it...going to try it.

    My Mom would make this!
Jello Salad? Does that fit here? Whipped Cream, Cottage Cheese, box of gelatin, fruit (usually canned & drained). My mom's favorite was strawberry gelatin with pineapple chunks or sliced bananas.

    I love Monte Cristos!

@Karen - I might have to try the rice like cereal! We eat so much rice around here and always have leftovers in the fridge. I have some kids who I think would love it.

Did you guys ever eat cold hot dogs? That was a fave snack growing up.
My SIL told me she would eat baked beans mixed with tuna and put it on crackers (sounds disgusting to me)...she thought it was totally normal until she went to college.

We did this- called it rice cereal for dessert- brown sugar & a little cinnamon and warm milk. SO good!

My husband still does this... yuck...

MMMM.. LOVE me some poutine and cheese curds! ;)

Besides the rice cereal which we totally did as kids, my dad would also add an egg to our top ramen (fancy!)
My daughters likes maple syrup (has to be the real good stuff) on her scrambled eggs.

Our local Ramen places do this, and I used to do this too. Is it strange?

@IntenseMagic I don't care for mustard over all, so both of those sound strange to me. :-)

My husband thinks I am nuts because I eat hot sauce/salsa on just about everything... before going vegan a favorite was tabasco on cottage cheese on blue corn tortilla chips.
I also like can green beans with chipotle tabasco right in the can
Sauerkraut straight from jar or can
another favorite is a baked potato with sauerkraut, vegan mozzarella (or other white "cheese") covered with mustard
Hummus and broccoli florets mixed in pasta - sort-a a vegan Alfredo
    and so many more.... :)
