Today is National Picnic Day!

I'm not sure I would have wanted to celebrate here today since it's kind of chilly. I'm honestly trying to remember the last time I was on a picnic lol. It was probably a family reunion or birthday or something of that nature, where everyone brought something. On vacation or a hiking day, we do pack coolers with snacks and sandwiches and things to snack on, but I'm not sure I've ever done the picnic basket thing lol

Do you enjoy picnics? Have you been on any lately?

When my kids were little we would picnic at the park and play at the playground after.

The closest we have done to a picnic lately is take Subway sandwiches to my daughter’s softball games. That’s my kind of picnic because I can buy the food and not have to pack or prepare anything myself.
 
I enjoy a picnic at a picnic table. The lolling around on a blanket in the grass is a long ago dream for me now. Even though now even the thought of sitting at a picnic table on a concrete bench or wooden bench with no back is not even remotely appealing.

I don't think I could get myself into or out of a hammock. LOL

I do have a picnic basket, and I use it! It's great for keeping items like bread that can be easily crushed. We still have to use our small cooler and perhaps another bag, but overall, the basket is marvelous.

Whenever we traveled, my mom always had a picnic basket and we would stop at rest areas rather than fast food restaurants. Sometimes my grandma would fry chicken for lunch or make fried egg sandwiches for us to eat in the car for breakfast after we had been on the road for some time. I have lots of memories of spreads of food like that.

Like Cheryl, getting down on the ground is not something I can do easily anymore. Well, I can get down, I just can't get back up. I could handle a picnic table but not for long periods of time. What I don't like is the flies buzzing around me when I'm trying to eat! I do have several Longaberger picnic baskets... they are great for storage!

Even when traveling as a child, we didn't do picnics. I can only think of one (and only because I have photos) that happened when I was in high school. Several of the Marker boys and their families went to Cedar Point for the day. Back in those days you could drive along the park fencing and park. We parked right along the fence by the Blue Streak and had a picnic there. Everyone went their own way during the day and we had a set time to meet for the picnic. Any other eating was on your own in the park. Also growing up, the Marker boys would get together 3 times a summer for volleyball picnics at one of the houses. We did eat outside using lawn chairs and picnic tables but no sitting on the ground. That's the extent of picnics for me.

This is me now too, if I got down there is almost 100% guarantee I won't get back up (or at least not easily!)
 
Someone gave us a fancy backpack type picnic basket for our wedding and I think we used it exactly once. Whoops. We don't generally say "let's go on a picnic" and pack food just for the sole purpose of having a picnic, but when we go camping we often go on drives in the surrounding area for tourist spots or trails or things like that and then we always pack food to eat while we are out and about. That's my type of picnic. :agree
 
I wouldn't call myself a picnic person. I'm more of a picnic table person, or BBQ girl. lol! I don't think I've been to a picnic in many years. I'll eat when we are at the park or bring lunch with the kids... but it's at a table usually.

I think the last time I sat on the ground to eat was when the kids were little and we were at the pool for the day, and spread it out on a towel next to the pool.
 
I love eating outdoors! But I'm not sure the last time I did a proper picnic on a blanket on the ground, etc.

That's my kind of picnic as well! We used to do the same when the kids were little.

I'm more of a picnic table gal as well.
I love the memories! I have lots of fond memories like that as well :)

We used to picnic right outside Carowinds when I was younger. Back in the day the park didn't have a lot of food options, unlike today. We spent time in the summer with family that lives near the park and that was always a treat.

Yeah, I'm not sure I've ever said "let's go on a picnic" lol Most often we are just doing something else outside and it involves food.

Same. I like a table, but we have done the food on the ground by the pool many times.

Same here. I love patio dining at a restaurant or a good cook out with family and friends.

We also received a fancy picnic basket for a wedding gift that I think we've used once. :D We are much more inclined to just load up a cooler and a plastic grocery bag and use those. :giggle But we don't picnic much anyway -- mostly just while hiking or traveling somewhere.

:lol I've always wanted a fancy picnic basket. Maybe one of those French wicker baskets with the plates and cutlery tucked under the lid, and some cute gingham napkins, and a couple of champagne flutes...but who am I kidding?! I would almost never use a fancy picnic basket like that...

I like the idea of a picnic more than the reality. It's a fair bit of work to prepare a basket-worthy picnic lunch, and then you have to worry about safe food temperatures, and about the weather, and also about potential unwanted and uninvited guests (from ants and wasps to racoons and black bears, depending on one's picnic site), and honestly? I think I'd just as soon eat indoors!

I do like the idea of a picnic, though.
 
Other than having snack food on the beach (where I'm usually sitting in a low chair), the last time I remember "picnicking" would be when my sister and I would take our families to Kings Dominion and picnic in the parking lot between our two cars.

Food was $$$ in the park and wasn't particularly good, so we'd leave, lay a blanket on the pavement between our cars and eat lunch. In the late afternoon we would buy the kids (total of 6) ice cream inside the park.
 
If I get to go with an alpaca I do!

Truthfully, I can do without a picnic. I seem to attract bugs. I'd likely wind up with chiggers all over and eat a few ants.
 
When I think of a picnic I think of any time you pack your lunch and eat it outdoors...doesn't necessarily have to be on a blanket. And yes, I love picnics. Usually, for us, it means packing a lunch, hiking, and then eating whenever we are hungry. We actually just hiked and packed our lunch and ate on the side of a mountain last week with my daughter's class.

I absolutely hate eating outside. Everyone else is like "Oh, lets sit out and enjoy the weather", and I hate it. I'm not sure, I feel very uneasy. It might be my phobia for spiders, insects and stuff. I'm such a party pooper. LOL
 
Love picnics, but always I use a mosquito repelent, because I really attract all kind of mosquitos and gnats. I love picnics on the beach, because is so windy that there's not flying insects, lol, and is so relaxing.
 
as a family we have lots of picnics, although not so many recently due to weather, illness, and TJ going off to Uni.

We will be having a picnic tomorrow. The entire extended family (on my husband's side) is gathering tomorrow to celebrate two 50th birthdays.

Then next weekend will be more picnics as part of the community celebrations for the coronation.
