We are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary next month. We didn’t realize how much wedding cakes cost, so hubby nixed a regular wedding cake when he saw the prices, and wants to get a sheet cake. Am I disappointed? Yes. Is this the end of the world? No. I just feel like a sheet cake is not very fancy.

What do you think? We will be having a small get together (about 30 people) after or vow renewal at church.

I'm going to say no not tacky. You can get nice sheet cakes & considering the small number of people a traditional tiered cake might be too much. I hate when you add the word "wedding" or "anniversary" prices instantly go up. You could even do alternatives like cookies, cupcakes or donuts!

I’m sorry you are disappointed. I don’t think a sheet cake is tacky. Hopefully you can find a way to make it fancy for your liking.

I do not think a sheet cake is tacky either. Congratulations to you both! (Also ask around, sometimes you may have a cake / baker amongst your friends/ church family, and don't realize it. They may be inclined to make one for you too!)

    Congrats on 25 years.
We only had a quiet family celebration. Personally I don't think the type of cake matters - what matters is the special time you are having together.

The only time I saw a wedding cake at an anniversary celebration was in 1971 for my grandparents' 50th. It was small compared to today's cakes and they had cupcakes and sheet cakes as well considering the immediate family was over 70 people. And, they ran away to get married and could never afford any celebrations while raising their family so this was their time to celebrate.

All other anniversaries I've been to had sheet cakes.

isnt that the truth! 300.00 for a two tier 1 6 inch and one 8 inch round cake that is wedding and yet you can buy a 10” round at WalMart for 16 bucks!!! It’s a racket.

I was disappointed last night. I had never seen a sheet cake at a vow renewal and I had spent 2 weeks talking to vendors, getting prices, finding a bakery , and scouring the internet for ideas, so I had to let all that work go.

my mind is on the sheet cakes now, and I have some ideas.

I wish - but we don’t really know many people out here. It’s ok though - there are plenty of bakeries around here. I just have to change my hunt from wedding bakeries.

thank you for the congrats. This is especially important to me because just a few years ago, we almost lost it all. This is more than just a celebration of years but of a saved and renewed marriage.

Interesting! The only renewals I have seen are with wedding cakes. My parents had the whole 4 tier white cake and did the whole cake cutting thing like at wedding receptions. Now that I think about it - they ran away to get married, so this was their only cake experience!

OMG that Strawberry one looks so yummy!!!

I started a Pinterest hunt last night and am finding some pretty cakes. Now to find a bakery that will make one without charging an arm and a leg!

Not tacky at all. Get whatever makes you happy and fits your budget. I figure why waste a ton of money if not necessary.

Honestly, the only celebrations I have been to (not necessarily renewals either) have been for 50 years. I honestly don't know of any one that has 25th celebrations. The few cousins that have made it past 25 just celebrated with their kids if they even celebrated.

    Congrats! 25 years is special.

I went big on our cake, but in many ways our wedding was super cheap - we paid for everything and so it was a very tight budget. For our 25th I had photos taken (it had rained on our wedding day and photos were lackluster), we had 50 people and a sit down meal - as opposed to the tea we had originally. It mattered to me to have a do-over and it was amazing. I don't have any regrets and don't have a need to have any further celebration. Even though next year will be 35! How is that even a possibility?
