Chance and I went to the movies today to see The Black Phone. We drove about 45 minutes away to see it even though we have a theater fairly close by. The reason being, our theater hasn't been updated like ever. We usually go about an hour away to the theater that has recliners and a full menu + bar, but today we went a little closer. Still much nicer seats and theater. I wish our local theater would sink some money into updates, I think they'd have great ROI!
I used to really enjoy the drive-in, but since they switched from speakers to a radio channel, it's just not the same. It's harder to take the lawn chairs and sit outside to watch/listen.

I know we've talked about going to the movies before, but I'm just wondering. When/if you go, are you particular about the theater you go to?

I have to be drug to the movie theater! I can't remember the last movie I went to, but it had to be with Asher - the grandkids are the only ones that I'll cave to. For one thing - they're SO loud and my ears are extremely sensitive - I have to wear earplugs. I can't see in the dark either, so I'm very unsure of my footing if we don't get into the theater before the lights go out. I hate to sit too far in the front, too. Tonight, ironically, my DD and SIL were trying to talk me into going to that new Elvis movie. They promised me that, at least, the theater has leather seats - I'm also afraid of sitting on cloth seats - there was an outbreak of head lice in a theater a few years ago. ****SHIVER***** I didn't give them an answer yet. LOL If there are recliners and food and alcohol, I might re-consider.

I go to what ever movie theatre is cheapest but in saying that I hardly watch any movies either at a theatre or otherwise.

I love our Cinema Cafe .. [it is in the neighborhood so 5 min away].. during the pandemic they updated it with the recliners. We always go to the first show and have lunch while watching a movie. If the movie we want to see is not playing there we do not go. We only went back to the movies in April after not being there for over 2 years... we saw Fantastic Beasts : Secrets of Dumbledore

Since then we have been back 3 more times... we saw Downton Abbey: A New Era, Maverick (Top Gun Sequel) and then 3 weeks ago we went and saw Elvis.. all very good! Prior to that, and still, we generally watch movies at home.

Last time I went to a theatre was to see either Nell or Maverick (not sure which Jodie Foster movie that came out last of those two) back in 1994. Too expensive, too much people, and zero chance of pausing the movie when I need a wee. LOL Movies are better on telly.

I love the movies! Ours has recliners, but they need to replace them as they are getting really worn - maybe a cover of a sort? I prefer the reclining seats over the old style, but most around here have the recliners. We also have the ones where you can order drinks, food and get help during the movie. I haven't been in awhile, but I enjoy it. I usually get finger foods so I don't have to concentrate. I am quite ok with popcorn and soda.

I just saw Thor and I'm going to see the Crawdads movie soon!

I haven't been to a movie theater since 1991. In fact, that theater is no longer around. It was in a small strip mall shopping center and the space it was in now has stores. The other main theater in Lima was in an actual mall that has been torn down. However, a Regal cinema complex was built in the parking lot of that mall. I've never been there.

We still have a theater here in town. For many years, it was $1 to see a movie and most were not that new. I believe new ownership took over, made some updates (no reclining seats though) and worked to get new releases quickly. To keep their expenses lower they do not accept debit or credit cards. Cash business only! They did have Maverick on opening weekend. One cool thing though was when the movie "First Man" came out, the premiere was at the local theater the night before it was released to everywhere else. Wanted to go but I had just had dental surgery so couldn't eat the meal provided before the movie (yes, it did cost more). They had a red carpet, photos on the red carpet and everything. Shut down the street in front of the theater for it. Still haven't seen the movie. LOL

I don't go to the movie theater. Because of my tinnitus I have trouble being in large crowds with lots of noise. So I have to wait for movies I want to see (not many though) to come on TV.

My theater buddy moved 12+ hours away, so between the pandemic and her move I haven't been to the movies in 2+ years. Most of the theaters near me offer reclining chairs. I like to sit in the middle of the last row so I don't end up with a "kicker" behind me. One of the theaters near me plays old movies and I enjoy going and seeing them on the big screen.

Our local theater closed two months ago, sadly. It was so convenient and inexpensive. The last movie we went to was with our littles- Encanto. Now the nearest is 40 minutes away and 3 times the price! Not likely we'll go. I think most theaters will be closing in the future.

I went a really long time without going to the theater. I did not like it at all. I will totally admit that the leather recliners and food are what changed me lol.

I'm not really a movie watcher except at the theater, unless the kiddo wants to watch one with me. I'm more of a episode at a time kinda gal usually.

That looks a lot like the theater that we usually go to! So comfy and relaxing :)

I prefer finger foods as well. I don't want to have to pay attention to my food while I'm trying to watch the movie lol!
I can't wait for Where the Crawdads Sing! I read the book last summer and it was soooo good!

How cool to have the premiere there! Sorry you had to miss it!
We used to have a "cheap movie" theater, but it shut down years ago. They just redid one of the super old theaters in a neighboring town and it's neat. They show lots of old movies. This week they are showing Smokey and the Bandit, American Graffiti, and Free Willy.

Yep, that's where we like to sit as well. Sometimes I will switch theaters if I can't get the seats I want haha.
I just replied ^^ about the theater near us that shows the super old movies. I haven't been yet, but I'd like to go.

I wouldn't be surprised. I haven't been to a movie in a long time that had more than 10 or so people in it.

I remember when we moved here to little (growing) Fredericksburg, VA from Los Angeles in 2000, I was disgusted by the sticky floored little old Regal movie theater 5 miles up the road. We had been regularly going to movies in L.A. and as you can imagine, we had many theaters from which to choose. So I think we only went to one movie right after we moved here. Then I had my three babies and it was many many years before I went to the theater again. I had no interest.

But about a decade ago we got a second movie theater 5 miles up the road, Paragon. I don't know if that's when Regal cleaned itself up but I have enjoyed a few movies there in the last decade. I think Paragon is grander though, with some theaters (it has 12) having reclining seats and such. We just go to whichever theater has the movie we want to go see.

I haven't watched a movie in the theater since the pandemic though. I think my husband and a couple of my kids went to see something last year. I just haven't been interested.

I don't care to go to the movies at all. I would rather stay home and watch a movie on my comfy couch in my pajamas eating ice cream.

We have a local small-town movie theater. Not fancy at all but it's cheap. I don't remember the last time I went.

Within about 15 minutes of our house, we have 4 movie theaters. (More? I can't remember.) Three have the reclining seats and are pretty nice, so whichever of them has the movie at the best time is where we go. The other is a second run movie theater. It's very dated, but also very inexpensive. We went there more when the kids were young and they showed older kids' movies during the day. These days my family is only interested in seeing Marvel and Star Wars movies shortly after they're released. That's not my taste, so I'll go along to be with everyone but don't really enjoy it. At least when we used to go see kids' movies I enjoyed them, LOL!

I used to love going to the movie theater but stopped going very often once we bought a big screen and surround sound for home. But when we wanted to go we had 4 huge multiplex theaters to choose from that were close by. Now in our little city we have one theater so no choice. It's not far, 15 min away (which is the other side of town, about the furthest away you can get from us). It has 7 movies playing right now and looks like it has the same options as what we had back in Vancouver theaters. It's tempting to go see Jurassic Park in 3D (I just saw that it is playing there) but I'll pass b/c we are going out of town probably next week so will be busy before we go. Maybe when we get back if it is still playing it might be fun.

I am in the club that does not go to theaters any more. The hubby and I would rather make the pizza and popcorn at home and be introverts.

Gotta say, I don't regret subscribing to HBO Max. I can "rent" some of the new release in the theater movies. The movie Dune is what drove me to getting HBO Max. Same with Amazon Prime. The in the theater movies are the most expensive to rent, however...~$20

@IntenseMagic sorry if you already answered this question - was The Black Phone any good?
