New Refrigerator

Ours is the old fashioned freezer on top style. In the size that we have room for the side by sides tend to be half fridge and half freezer, and we need more fridge space and less freezer space. I generally like our fridge a lot--there's room in the door for anything we want to put there, the shelves are deep enough to fit a lot, and the 3 drawers are well designed. I wish the freezer was on the bottom and had pull out bins because things get buried in ours, but DH is slow to come around to new things when he feels the old design works fine. Over the last 2 years we've had to replace our dishwasher, range, and microwave due to age or breaking. We began transitioning from white to black appliances since we'd wanted to do it for a while and knew those 3 would probably all need to be replaced relatively soon, so now the fridge is the only white thing left. We're holding off for now because of the supply chain issues and high costs, but probably in the next year we'll either donate our fridge or put it in the basement as a second one and replace it with something black. I need to start working on DH about the bottom freezer now!

My fridge is a Frigidaire ... it too makes a loud noise when something (compressor?) cycles on. I've had it for about 6 years now and most of the time I don't even hear the noise anymore.
Yeah, this one was so loud you could hear it squeal though the whole main level. It sounded somewhere between a plane taking off and a mouse dying by cat. It was horrible and loud and obnoxious, and I hated it. I'm betting most are loud like that since they have a video to tell you it's normal. Ugh.

Ours is a normal fridge with freezer on the bottom. I like not having to bend over to see what is in the fridge. It's big enough for what we store there, most of our frozen food is in the stand-up freezer in the basement.

I love my side by side with the water and ice dispenser. I am not fond of the draw style.. my Dad had the french one with the double door refrig and then the freezer drawer.. not my fav.. I love the side by side. Ours is a black whirlpool.. got ours at Best Buy about 13 years ago now.. it was a floor model and had a slight ding on the side (that you don't even notice) and got a great deal on it :)

Look for one that has square corners on the freezer baskets. Some are slanted at the back and those do require more packing skills. Those with squared up baskets are more normal.

That said - I am in refrigerator selecting mode too - arrrgghhhh. Let me start by saying get the extended warranty and read it well. You want one that will refund or replace should the fridge completely die. The ice maker on my 4 door Frigidaire (the one with 2 drawers - the middle can be fridge or a freezer) died 14 months in (2 months after the manufacturer's warranty expired). Because I had the extended warranty, Lowes sent out a repair person. Unfortunately, due to a design flaw, the water pipe from the water filter to the ice maker froze and then burst. It sent water into the inner workings of the fridge until we found this out. It is not repairable. So they authorized a replacement even though the rest of the fridge and freezer are working (for now). After waiting a month for Lowes to call me, I finally got through to them and they gave me Lowes gift certificates to replace it.

I can buy whatever I want but I really like this model -- but it doesn't matter because the bigger problem is Lowes has very few of any kind of fridge in stock right now. I can't even order one if I want the same brand/style - at least right now. And because I only have gift certificates, I can't go to another store either. So what to do, what to do. Meanwhile, I am waiting and hoping this one keeps working - and I am hitting up the Dollar Tree for more ice cube trays.

Oh gosh! What a nightmare! I have heard that the water lines running inside the freezer burst quite often and that is why some of them now have them running on the outside like Courtney mentioned. I'm so glad you mentioned the warranty. We did find a fridge yesterday to order and were debating on whether to do the extended warranty or not. I think we really need to because those 5 years we will have two kids in college and wouldn't be able to afford a new fridge if something bad happens.

Hmmm - yesterday my replacement fridge was not available, but today it let me order one to be delivered next week. I am not holding my breath on the date but maybe I will get one.

Yay! That's awesome! :)

My DD has a smart fridge - she can "look" into it when she's at the grocery and see what she has. LOL It has lots of cool features and has all kinds of bells and whistles on it.

That would be SO cool! I have to call my kids and make them run to the fridge and look for me. :giggle

We've had the same kind of thing, we've had to replace our dishwasher and microwave recently (in the last two years) too, so we started the transition from white to stainless. When we moved into our house we had an OLD built in oven from the 70s. It was ugly, but it worked and we were poor, so I told my hubby that we'd replace it when it broke, except it never broke. I painted my kitchen cabinets white in 2019, so at that time I found a use white built in oven on Facebook and finally had all matching appliances for about a year before the dishwasher broke and we start moving to stainless. Now with the fridge dying, the only one that doesn't match again is my oven. :giggle

So, my hubby and I took the afternoon off work yesterday and spent about two hours at Lowes looking at all of the different fridge styles. I was pretty reluctant to switch to the freezer in the bottom style after looking at them. The drawers are SO massive and I was worried I'd have to dig through a big stack of stuck to find what I needed. I found one (a Samsung I think?) that had double doors on the top for the fridge and double doors on the bottom for the freezer too that I really loved, but sadly that one was too big four our opening in our kitchen. We had it down to two other ones and had to pick the Whirlpool one because that's the only one that would fit without changing cabinets around. I do not have the time or mental capacity to deal with that the week before our graduation party. Lol. So, we ordered the one that fit and it's supposed to arrive on June 9th. That's a LONG time to go without a fridge, but at least it'll be here 2 days before our party. Yikes!

Here's the one we ended up with and then had an extra coupon that ended yesterday too. Bonus!

Pretty :) Best of luck!

We got our new fridge delivered last week-- after ordering it on President's Day Weekend in January! We had a side-by-side and replaced it with a freezer drawer on the bottom and a french-door fridge on top style. We got the GE Profile with honeycomb lighted back wall- the whole back wall is lighted so there are no dark spaces even when all the shelves are full. I used lots of clear refrigerator organizers and it is so nice! Our old fridge had a leak that caused a TON of water damage so we had our kitchen out of commission from Christmas until Easter, so we really are glad to have replaced the leaking fridge. Here is the new fridge:

We have a garage fridge and a standing freezer out there as well, so we keep all meats in the standing deep freezer and all leftovers and canned drinks in the outside fridge. Therefore, the indoor freezer just holds vegetables and ice cream as well as frozen fruits for smoothies.

Glad you found one. We got our fridge from Lowe's and were on the fence about the extended warranty but it included rebates on the water line filter that has to be changed every 6 months, which basically meant the warranty paid for itself!

I would recommend anything but what I have :giggle I like the fridge itself ok (freezer on the bottom), but it's a shiny black with no handles, only a slot on the side to open it which no one uses the way it's intended, and shows ever single fingerprint. It drives me up a wall.
Ohhhh..... I had a black cooker once..... Same problem made worse by cooking spills too,so whatever you do @Karen, Never get black.
I am not much help on anything else. I. Have separate fridge and freezer. And in Malta we use bottled water for drinking ,so the dispenser models are a waste of time and space here. Good luck though.
Edit : so happy you found something.

Yes! We got ours from Lowes and said the same thing about the warranty paying for itself because of the filters too! :agree

That is SO cool! I love that the whole back wall is lit up! How smart!

We got a new Maytag when we moved. I love the large size, the big pull out lower freezer with two drawers that slide. The fridge has two pull out drawers and one big slim pull out drawer which I love for putting things in a single layer that are easy to see i.e. bags of salad, bag of peppers, pudding, sour cream, etc. The door shelves are a good size too. My only complaint is that the water/ice dispenser stores the ice cubes in the freezer, taking up space that I would rather put to better use but my hubs says he can't live without the water/ice dispenser so we have it. It is very quiet.
