Are you a Double Spacer??? | pad patter 12.21.2020

Single spacer here. I learned on a typewriter but switched to a computer in grade school. Random, you can tell Word to turn double spaces into single automatically. I had a bunch of seniors in my college class that did that to prevent the lost points for double spacing.

I seem to recall that when I did a paralegal class, it was double spacing for a lot of the court filed documents.

Do the double spacers: do you double space here at the Pad too? Or just when writing papers?

Um, I learned on a typewriter, and I refuse to say it was "back in the day". I know the 80's was awhile ago, but not that long, right?!?!?

Wait, is this a thing?!?! Crap. I use sentences a lot complete with punctuation.
I do too!....my kids are always asking me why it takes so long to send a text and I have a friend that I joke with about our shared hatred of 3LA....three letter abbreviations....(except WT#)

Having just responded, looking at the gap after the period after day above, it looks like a single space and I typed a double. Maybe the iPad has decided the spacing issue for me.

That's because of the typeface. Back when we learned it was either PICA or Elite, monospaced fonts. These days you very seldom see a fixed type font used. The majority of the fonts now are proportional where the characters occupy only as much width as it needs so a double space looks like a single space. Monospaced fonts are when the each character occupies the same amount of space on the horizontal line of text. Remember the squeezed look of the m's and w's compared to the i's and the l's?

I learned to type on an electric typewriter and then on a computer. I was taught to double space and it took a LONG time for me to move to single spacing. I remember moaning and complaining about having to change, but now I just single space and don't think twice!

My boss is old school and likes me to double space my reports but for personal stuff I single space or when texting, no space, hit the period key and then keep typing. So I'm a 0, 1 and 2 space typer :)

Same for me. I still sometimes double space without even thinking about it.

I don't know how serious it is but I've read a couple articles about how texting is kind of a new language with all its acronyms and casual expression and I have teen/young adult kids. My own kids don't say anything negative about the way I text but I definitely see a difference between the way they text versus me and other adults. Some of it I'm sure you know already because it has been evolving since we began using computers and typed out emoticons with punctuation. Like, all caps is yelling. A single period is for emphasis and multiple periods can mean something else, I forget. I don't remember it all, but basically it's just language evolving as it always has. I think it's fascinating.

After nearly 42 years as a legal secretary I always double space at the end of a sentence. And yes, I learned on a manual typewriter back in the 60s. Even with computer fonts I think a double space makes it easier to see where one sentence ends and another one begins. I also use periods and double spacing when sending text messages.

Oh yeah, a double space is also needed between the state name and the zip code. LOL!!!

I agree with @Memaw2Wm that double spacing makes it easier to see where one sentence ends and another one begins even on a computer. But then I am of the opinion that periods at the end of a sentence are a very good thing. If I see something that has no sentence structure, I don't even bother reading it.

I was a double spacer until around 15 years ago when someone said to me that single spaces was the "new way".

I still double space when I'm typing on my computer. Also, like Karen said, the iPhone automatically double spaces in order to capitalize the next sentence. I single space when I journal on a layout now, because it looks better. I'll never stop the tried and true double spacing when I'm writing on my computer. though. I'd have to re-program my brain. Hahaha

I learned typing with double spacing ... I don't remember what year it was when we changed the BIN standards ... and we had to switch to a space ... it was a serious change ...

I am a double spacer but the online systems seem to take care of it. I don't even notice anymore as I mostly read online.

Single spacer here probably after someone on line (Cathy Zielski?) said double was out of date. I only consciously use double when I have an exclamation point and then an "I". !I With some fonts it's not legible and yes, I use too many !!!!!s :)

how ironic! I just had an "argument"/conversation with my 14 year old about this as she was typing her final review of a Business class. LOL. She was putting single spacing and I had to explain to her when you use a double versus when you use a single. I didn't realize that transitioning to a single was even a thing. LOL. Yes, I learned on a typewriter, but I was also on the yearbook staff, competed in business competitions in high school, wrote papers as a business in college (yes, yes, I know...LOL), and help my husband now by proofing all of this Masters papers. I will never stop the double spacing. I think a single space looks odd. As in right now I've just switched to a single space. Between my sentences. It just looks too cramped. I can't handle it. haha

Also... interesting tidbit, if you're typing on a Apple device like a phone or iPad, it won't put the period in automatically unless you double space. This fuel my opinion that it's proper still. ha ha!

Ha!!! You see we are RIGHT, you all other single spacers are WRONG!!!

When I was taught to type I was told and corrected over and over to double space after period.

I'm definitely a double-spacer! Typing all of those legal documents (and I do mean typing not word processing!) made me one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

:giggle They can't just go changing the rules on us... right?!?!? Lol!
