CHALLENGE CLOSED
Hello all my lovelies who tried my technical challenge here at the Lilypad. It has been a delight to see your wonderful and creative pages, but alas there is only winner of the $10 coupon from NBK Designs chosen randomly. Personally I would award you it to you all, so on behalf of NBK Designs we would like to thank you all for entering the challenge but the winner this time is Lorieh. I will be contacting you soon with the coupon code. We have another challenge ready for you to try again starting on 29th July to 31st August hope you can join us.

  1. Hi everyone and welcome to this month's technique challenge, where we'll be making a newspaper “Dot” effect using Photoshop’s Filter Gallery’s effects “Cutout” and “Halftone Pattern”.
    RULES
This challenge runs from 1st-28th of July.
One lucky scrapper will be randomly chosen to win a $10 coupon to the NBK Design store.
You must use 100% of NBK Design Products.
You may use a template from a designer at The Lily Pad if it fits in with the challenge.
Post your layout in the NBK Design Gallery and in this forum, and link your layout to the gallery.

I'll be checking the forum daily, so if you have any problems just post here or send me a pm.
    Most importantly, have fun

Step 1. Open an image preferably of a person’s head and shoulders
Step 2. Duplicate your image twice
Step 3. Turn off the top layer and work on the middle layer
Step 4. Convert this layer to a smart object.
Don’t worry if your software doesn’t support smart objects. Smart objects allow you to re-edit your layer if you are not satisfied with the results of the effect
Step 5. Go to Filter>Filter Gallery and in the Artistic Folder choose “Cutout”.
For my image my settings were Number of Levels 4, Edge Simplicity Zero, Edge Fidelity 2. My image size was 3600x2376 and 72px Res.
Step 6. Activate the top layer and create a smart object as before
Step 7. Go Filter>Filter Gallery and in the Sketch Folder choose “Halftone Pattern”
For my image my settings were Size 3, Contrast 2, Pattern Type DOT. I changed the Blend Mode to “Soft Light” for the Halftone layer and “Darker Color” for the cutout layer.
You may have to experiment the settings and blend modes to suit the resolution of your image
Step 8. Save your work as a JPG and create a layout of your choice.
    I have used NBK’s Selfcare gesso paper #4, Selfcare-EL-Transfer5 and Selfcare-EL-Filmframe4 Mask.

As someone who does not use Photoshop I need some help understanding what the instructions given for Photoshop actually do to the image so I can have a go at translating it to my software. Alternatively if people know other ways that produce the same effect that I could duplicate that would be great too. I'm struggling to understand what final effect the challenge is actually looking for.

thank you.

Oh dear Angela, can you tell me what Software you are using, maybe we can get help from someone who uses the same software. I wouldn't like you to miss out trying the challenge

Mimi, I love your results for this challenge the cut out and halftone pattern really look good on your model

Great job Janis, I am so pleased that you were able to follow the instructions to get this result

I use Serif's Craft Artist. I also have an old version of Serif Photoplus installed.

@Angela Toucan Craftartist has both filters, but the half tone one is really rubbish. how ever you can fiddle a bit with it afterwards.
here goes;
you would probably need to work on the just 1 photo, but make a copy just the same, and leave it invisible on a separate layer.
Then photo lab ; On the right hand side filters, click the + sign for the drop down menu. choose styles then paper cutouts .. chose the levels on the sliders, not much like a 1 or 2. click ok to commit the filter. I do it seperatly because then you can mess about with it without to much fuss.
Back to photolab and filters. Choose Styles like before and choose half tone in this case leave all colour sliders on 0 or 1 if you must.... commit filter.
Now on workspace, select the photo go to blend mode and choose soft light. it will go very faint, but copy and paste your photo until you have a more solid image. If you need to you can use the original photo on your separate layer as a sort of overlay, but only using the transparency tool,to give a bit more volume. Hope it helps.

Thank you so much @Nemla for helping out with Angela's query you are an angel. I have no idea how to use Craft Artist and Christa you page just blew me away. And Linda both you pages are awesome. The effects seem to work better with a full face. And Marianne, I love your double image too. I am so impressed with all your pages here in the forum, I really wasn't sure how it would go
