Grammar | Pad Patter 9.9

I was never really taught grammar in school (thanks to the California schools in the 60's-70's). My "English" classes were Novel (where we read all class long), Poetry (ditto), Annual Staff (yes, making the yearbook was considered English because we had to write things to put in it...), Independent Reading, Journalism (school newspaper staff). I even took a Cinema class that filled a History requirement. All we did was watch Movies and discuss them afterwards (my teacher had Hollywood connections). I took a language arts class as an elective my senior year in high school so I could learn the parts of a sentence. I failed the class, simply by that time I couldn't wrap my brain around sentence structure. I'm so right-brain dominant that these things simply don't make sense or come easily to me. Thankfully my teacher knew why I was taking the class (so I could actually learn something) so she gave me an A for effort. Bless her!

I'm part of a Facebook group from my hometown. People will post memories and ask about people, and the like. The thing that gets me is that some people will write one huge run-on sentence without punctuation for their post. And in all caps. Drives me nuts. It's no wonder they write that way because we weren't taught anything in school!

Here are some GRAMMAR PET PEEVES that make my eye twitch ...lol

The one that gets me the most is when someone uses the word DAM instead of DAMN. Why people, why do you insist on spelling it incorrectly? Damn it!
or
When someone says ‘SOMETHINK’ instead of ‘SOMETHING’. Drives me bonkers, I just want to flick that letter K right off their tongue!

At first I thought this one was just a typo but I am seeing sooooo many people type ‘AN’ instead of ‘AND’...WHY???? PLEASE EXPLAIN!

Check this guy out, gotta love ‘im!

My mom was a grammar nazi when we were kids (and still today!) so I've seen it all! ;) My BIGGEST grammar peeve is Seen/Saw. I don't' know if it's a country bumpkin thing (where I grew up) but people ALWAYS say it wrong & it drives me nuts.

Side note- When my hubby was writing his thesis for his MBA- I proof read that stupid thing a zillion times. I put a sticky note on his laptop that said "They're/Their/There" and "Too/Two/To" because it was wrong ALL over his paper. Drove me crazy to read that thing! ;)
A big nerdy high 5 to u! :hi5
eta: spells out Y O U properly on phone & hits own forehead!

It irks me when school gets things wrong, especially DD's academic high school - I think the students could write & spell better than the faculty & admin

I'm less irked by spelling since hanging out here for years but if my kids ever write the words colour or favourite without the 'u', I lose it - they still come and show me 'wrong' spellings in bedtime reads, it's been effective as a teaching tool; -)

When my daughter was in middle school, they sent kids who made the Honor Roll home with bumper stickers along the lines of My child is on the honor roll at XXX Middle School. BUT, honor was misspelled. I called the prinicipal to let him know. He was quite unhappy. They had to notify all the parents, tell them to throw out the bumper sticker, and tell them that new bumper stickers were being ordered.

Oh good heavens!

To all the people who hate the wrong use of apostrophe or are grammer-nazi's, I'd like to say something. As a person for which English isn't her first language: it's a difficult thing.
For example: our rules for apostrophe are quite a bit different from yours. So it's very easy to make the mistake if you're still thinking in your own language.
I KNOW the logic behind the English rules, but my mind usually goes faster than my hands can type or write, so mistakes are quickly made. Especially when words sound or are written very similarly and ESPECIALLY when your autocorrect is in your own language and it changes the English writing back the your own language.

So I guess it's just a reminder to be kind to people who speak/write multiple languages but make mistakes in grammer, pronunciation, etc. The fact that we actually know more then one language is pretty awesome. It doesn't help to be mean about details.
