The journaling reads:
The boys found a caterpillar in our garden at the end of the summer and we decided to try to observe its metamorphosis. We placed it in a mason jar with a netted lid and were rewarded with the opportunity of seeing the chrysalis beginning just two days later. When the butterfly eventually emerged from its chrysalis, it was too rainy to release it at home, so it made the trip to the beach with us and we released it near the ocean.

(Lest anyone be concerned, I did lots of research to be sure that the butterfly would not be harmed or cause harm to the environment before releasing it where we were headed on vacation, rather than where we found it.)
