People often comment about our red door. I hang it proudly in my home because it was the door that was on my grandfather's birth house. My grandfather, Ben Henry "Bill" Mayo (October 23, 1904-Sept 14, 1995) was born in 1904 in this home that was on the land that his family purchased. They bought 640 acres (1 section of land) for $2.00 per acre. It was located approximately 6 miles west of Winters, Texas. The land was located on an area called Poe Corner where the highway split the property. The measurements of the home were 15ftx9in X 13ftx9in. My grandfather was born in the back part of the house which was 8ftx4in X 16ftx1in.
The families sold the land for a profit around 1904, after my grandfather's birth. My grandfather's family then moved to the Dale community east of Winters, Texas. He became a farmer later on in life and then retired in Winters with his wife Thelma. They had one child, my father, Benny Mayo.
I love photos like this!! Your red door is just perfect and I loved reading the story! Could you imagine being able to buy that much property for just under $1,300.00!!
