MOC 7 Challenge: January 31 - Traveler's Notebook + Connection
Journaling reads:
My grandparents’ health was declining, so they decided it would be best to move from their three stories house to an one level apartment with elevator. In the summer of 2008 they bought the penthouse of a senior apartment building that was newly constructed. Shortly after there was also an assisted living and a care facility build for seniors next to their building. Because they now lived at the top floor they had great views of the surrounding nature and the new buildings and they settled in with great enthusiasm. Little did they know that within a year my granddad would be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and that his condition got worse so rapidly that my grandma wasn’t able to take care of him full time without her own health being compromised. So at the beginning of summer 2009 my granddad had to move to the special Alzheimer department of the building next to theirs.
From his new room you could see right into their apartment and vice versa. This made it a bit comforting at times as they could literally see each other just looking out the window, but most of the time this view they once loved so much was now also painful at the same time. They still lived close together, yet so far apart. The fact that they still lived in close proximity did however made it possible for my grandma to visit my granddad three times a day and help him eat and take care of him. I truly believe that this was the main reason that my grandfather was the resident that had been living there the longest until his passing in February 2016. The almost 7 years that he had been there were filled with many sad moments, but also some very happy ones that I treasure dearly. They say that out of all bad things something good can come and the one positive thing that came from my granddad’s truly horrible disease is that it made the family grow even closer by lovingly caring for him together.
