Summer Camp 2025 - Week 4 - Back in the Saddle Challenge
Journaling -
Life since Benjamin was diagnosed with Autism has been challenging. Some days, it's frustrating when we're talking about the same problems over and over and he seems to understand and then the next day has a meltdown for the same reason as the day before. Some days, I'm amazed I still have hair. Some issues are just age-related things that he'll grow out of in time... others are part of who he is. His new school he switched to at the end of 3rd grade has helped. Social Skills Group with kids just like him has helped too. He's definitely more confident in his abilities and is willing to push himself out there.
And then there are days like this past Sunday where a little thing (a crying baby in a restaurant) could not be ignored or moved on from. He mentioned numerous times how loud the baby was on the other side of the restaurant was. He refused to step outside for a moment. On the plus side, he didn't scream and he tried to cover his ears when the cries started... When he was finally finished eating, he agreed to go outside with me and wait while Daddy paid the bill.
We talked about our frustrations and what we could do differently. He blamed the baby. I told him that I thought the baby was loud, too, but the mom took the baby outside a few times and tried to distract the baby with toys and food.
“Babies are loud,” I said. He sighed and grumbled.
“Babies are annoying,” he finally said.
“Sometimes,” I agreed. “What could we do next time?”
“Not have babies in a restaurant -
“That's not an option most of the time. What can we do?” I asked.
He frowned. “Go outside.”
He grumbled and I know he was saying what he thought I wanted to hear; he didn't really believe it or agree.
“It's a nice day to be outside,” I said.
“Yeah,” he agreed and watched the people on the green. Silence for a beat -
“But it would have been better without the baby.”

I love how you separated out the page, and the hello life repeated is perfection! Sounds like a real struggle and some days I might even relate to this with a 4 year old grandson exerting is increasing independence and opinions. I love how you captured the conversation and documented this moment in time.

Sensory overload is no joke for these kiddos...so distracting and overwhelming. When I went over to the coast with my youngest kiddo the other day, we went through a town that used to drive my oldest (the one diagnosed with autism) so crazy. I told my youngest about how his brother could not stand the smell (it was the home of a charter fishing marina and fish processing plants). He was also an ear-coverer. So much noise in the world we don't even notice, but they do. Anyway, I feel for you, and I love the conversation you had with your son and the way you've documented it. Love the bold work on the left.

This is a fabulous storytelling page - I was transported into the restaurant with you and your son (and the annoying crying baby). It's hard dealing with a neuro divergent child and my heart is with you. There are so many great details here. I just LOVE your repeated use of the word art.

Oh sweet soul! I have such a soft spot for autistic kids. I worked with them for many years as a teacher. It can be challenging at times, but they often have a unique perspective on life. Your presentation of this story, with the repeated title, brings home the nature of dealing with autism, where explanations and reasoning has to be repeated often, and is usually met with resistance.
