Living next to the North Island Main Trunk Railway Line has been a way of life for the past twenty six years so you could say trains = my life. But in so many other ways I wouldn’t be without them. I regularly use them to go shopping, go to appointments, go to work and events. Truly if there were no trains my community would be very small and I would never go out. Sure at times they annoy me, like the signals go out with great frequency so then I am stranded. Or there is maintenance on the tracks over a weekend so buses are replacing trains which a ) aren’t accessible and b) take twice as long. My worst experience on a train was going to uni, the train had been delayed leaving Manurewa, then about halfway to Homai, we hear a bang and the train came to a grinding halt, something had happened to the power supply they thought. We were told to wait on the train......minutes ticked over to hours and we were still there. They had managed to get the train doors open so we had some fresh air, others had managed to climb the probably two or three metre drop between the train and the tracks with ease, I couldn’t without help. Eventually I did, next issue was getting railbuses at short notice, they did come but they were the most rickety old things that weren’t truly acccessible. By this time I had realised if I got to uni at all it would be a miracle and given I was so late as it was, to just cut my losses and head home for the day by normal bus instead.
