Writing (word count 484):
“Can I ask you something?”
He sounds almost hesitant and she wonders what it might be. It doesn’t matter, she knows that, but she can’t help her own sense of uncertainty. She manages to keep it out of her reply, at least.
“You can ask anything. If it’s something I don’t want to answer I’ll tell you.”
“When I met up with you, in the gallery. You were walking around holding something in each hand. I keep wondering what it was.”
What’s more disconcerting - that he was watching her without her being aware of it or that she can’t think of a good reason to dodge the question?
“Rocks.”
His expression suggests that isn’t what he was expecting. His brows raise and his eyes get that curious look, the one she’s seeing more often as the time passes. “What kind of rocks?”
The heat in her cheeks is mild but that’s little consolation. She manages to keep her chin up and her eyes on his as she reaches into her skirt pockets and pulls them out. She extends her hands, letting the chunks rest on her palm. She lifts left, then right, as she explains.
“Rose quartz and coal. My rocks, that I carry with me pretty much all the time. Usually in pockets or my purse, but when something big or interesting is going on I hold them.”
She can see the question in his eyes, but she won’t answer it. Not until he asks. He seems to be debating doing that, his eyes going between hers and her palms.
“Why?” he finally asks, amusement and curiosity warm in his voice. He thinks he knows but he’s trying not to assume. Something like that, anyway.
She can’t think of any reason to dodge that one either or blow it off. She could easily give some glib answer that doesn’t matter and closes the conversation, but why? Whatever is going on between them in this day full of serendipity and surprise won’t be helped along by dodging. Honesty counts, always. Sometimes more than others, even for something as simple as the rocks in her pockets.
“Because they fit just right. Because they make me feel better.” A pause for a deep breath, resolve for the last part. “And because I like to think little bits of energy from these big, important moments gets absorbed into them. Little bits I can maybe access when my own energy isn’t enough.”
She holds her breath and waits for his reaction. History tells her it’s likely to be indifference or derision … but she never was any good at history anyway.
“And today, that’s a bit of energy you’d like to save?”
She rolls her eyes at that - well duh - and he laughs happily. “Yes. Today is a bit of energy I’d like to save.”
He turns serious but his smile stays. “Yeah. Me, too.”
