- This layout is about our quest to find the graves of my 2nd Great Grandma Mahala Hussey and my Great Aunt Virginia Hussey.
Journaling says:
In 2013 we were disappointed that we weren’t able to locate the graves of my 2nd great grandmother Mahala Hussey and great aunt Virginia Hussey. We knew the cemetery where they were supposed to be buried, but we were not able to find the section where the graves should have been located. It was a huge let down. When we got back I was determined to do more research into the cemetery. I tried to find maps or anything that might show where the section they were buried in is. We thought that maybe their graves weren’t marked by stones or that the stones had eroded too much to read, but Virginia died in 1942 so it didn’t make sense that hers could have eroded that much that fast. Their graves had to be there and I was going to find them. One day while reading an issue of “Family Tree Magazine” it had some tips on locating graves. One of the tips was to contact local funeral homes to obtain cemetery information. So far in my search I had not been able to find any information on the sextant for the Old Mission Cemetery where the Husseys were buried. So I found a number for a funeral home in Upper Sandusky and the person I spoke to knew just who I should contact. This felt like a promising lead. I contacted the sextant who said he would look into it and get back to me. A few days later he called back and said he had found the graves. YAY! He said that one of the stones was knocked over, but the other was still in good condition. He described for us the location of the graves. With this new information it was time to plan another expedition to Ohio to find the Husseys and I wasn’t going to leave this time without finding them. When we got to the cemetery we began our search in the area where the sextant had mentioned, but still had no luck finding them. Luck though was on our side because there was a volunteer at the Old Mission church who had a book of the cemetery that had most of the older graves listed in it. It took a while, but with her aid we finally we found the graves we sought. It was amazing! The graves were covered with weeds and tall grasses. They were along the path near the old church like we had been told, but the weeds and grasses obstructed our view so we just overlooked them. It was such a wonderful feeling to find their graves. It broke my heart to see that the top of my 2nd great grandmother’s grave had rolled off its base. We placed some flowers we had brought with us on the graves so they would know we were there and that they have not been forgotten.
