JOURNALING: (the title is "Night Witches" in Russian)
Night Witches was the nickname for the female military aviators of the Soviet Air Force's 588th Night Bomber Regiment that conducted bombing missions against the Nazis during WWII. They flew over 23,000 sorties in obsolete Polikarpov P-2 biplanes that were originally crop dusters. One of the techniques they used was to put the plane in idle and glide to the release point to conceal the noise. German soldiers said the resulting wind noise sounded like broomsticks. Hence the name "Nachthexen" or "Night Witches."
