Most everyone likes to watch
fireworks on the 4th of July and that includes me. Where we live, there is no fireworks display readily accessible and we did not want to drive halfway across the city to find one. We were aware that, in our neighborhood on the shores of Puget Sound, there were homeowners who provided a nice fireworks show every year apparently just because they like to shoot off fireworks. It is nothing like the display at the Space Needle on New Year’s Eve, but it is nice and it is close. As such, I grabbed my camera and we set off through Lincoln Park to watch fireworks. My husband, who was apparently more safety conscious than me, wanted to walk down the street to the south end of Lincoln Park and then down the access road to Puget Sound. I wanted to walk through the park and get some sunset pictures before going to the fireworks area. Understanding the mindset that I get once I have camera in hand and a photo shoot idea in mind, he acquiesced. Lincoln Park is 132 acres of mostly trees with walking trails cutting through the woods. What I failed to take into account was that, once the sun has set, it gets really dark in Lincoln Park and really
spooky. I kept telling myself that nothing was going to happen. This was sort of working until someone popped out in front of us from one of the cross trails. We passed each other with no problem and continued walking. At that point I removed my
camera from around my neck and handed it to my husband with instructions to use it as a
weapon if necessary
. I didn’t think he could photograph a mugger into submission, but hitting the potential mugger with a camera would probably do some damage, to the mugger that is. At any rate, after stumbling on numerous tree roots that are not really a problem in daylight, we finally broke out of the trees and found a path to the fireworks display. Next year we will stay on the well-lighted streets.
