When I was expecting Josh, we had chosen Joshua for a boy and Shannah for a girl (when researching names I discovered Suzanne was derived from the Hebrew Shoshanna, both of which meant Lily – a fun fact I never knew and, as my mum’s name is Lily, a surprising coincidence).

So, you would think Shannah was top of the list for your name, but by the time I was expecting you I had gone off the name, thinking that it sounded very ‘soap operish’. Whilst working, I had dealings with someone called Ciara Moore, I didn’t know anything about her, but I loved the way the name sounded – and would sound as our surname rhymes. I did some digging into the name and found that Chiara with a ‘h’ was the Italian version and, to me, sounded much more exotic. It is the Italian form of Claire and means “bright or famous”.

Your middle name, Leanne, is a combination of the first part of your dad’s name (Len) and the second part of mine (Suzanne, the Anne part also being the middle name of your Nana and my own Nana – yet another generational connection).

I have been sad that, over the years you didn’t like your name. You hated that you could never buy anything personalised from the shops and also that people always either pronounced the ‘H’ when speaking your name or consistently spelt it wrong (Nana would always spell it Kiara – which is the spelling of the cub in The Lion King and, another coincidence, Joshua’s favourite film at onetime).

Fast forward and you were thrilled when Mamma bought you back a gift she had personalised for you whilst in Italy, an embroidered name hanger for your room. And I am convinced it was your name that got you the interview for the part time waitressing job you got at Armando’s Italian restaurant (given they made a big deal of your name during the interview).

And now I have come to scrapbook about your name, I find out that the meaning of your middle name Leanne is also “bright” and, yes, you have brought so much brightness, light and joy into my life.

ETA and let’s not forget that Chiara rhymes with tiara!
