Having stayed at Wyndford since 2013 I often get asked why I keep wanting to go back. Well besides that it feels like home and is a great relaxing place, it is also filled with history. So maybe it is time for us to tell the story of Wyndford. The name causes confusion on occasion! It originated with the first owner Millie Marten from Scotland and comes from the Wynd-ing road to the Ford – a river crossing at Caledonspoort that was the only place where a double span of oxen could cross the Caledon River, way back in the 1920’s. The first rooms on the farm were named after English hotels, namely Dorchester, Victory, Cecil, Savoy, Claridges, Crystal Palace and Victory and are still in use today. This explains why none of the rooms are the same! Added to over the years as the ownership changed many times, but always family owned and run. Lindy and George are the current owners and took over from Lyn (George’s sister) and Roy.
While they can tell the story from 2004, there are also interested points in the farms history like the fact that the Summerhouse was built by the skilled Italian prisoners of war – still standing and enjoyed twice a day where tea and fresh homemade cakes and cookies are served.
Animals have always been a large part of Wyndford starting with Millie, her large cats and lots of horses. Today there are the dogs Rocky, Millie, Luna and Sproket. Molly, Sproket’s sister, unfortunately died in March and Humphrey, The Boss cat has disappeared! Little Socks is also still around. There are also the tortoises… not just the one on the mountain which is the logo for Wyndford, but also Charlotte, and the two in the pen whose names I can’t remember. Then now and then there are sheep, lambs, cows, horses, geese and lots and lots of bunnies.
We have gathered lots of memories over the years… getting together with the friends from Lay Witness, all the good food, the various mountain walks.… and then there is the bell! It calls for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as morning and afternoon tea. We are often actually waiting before the bell rings…. Like we haven’t eaten all day.
Whenever we drive down to Wyndford, getting that first glimpse of the chapel is a sure sign that we have arrived. Then we have to look out for free range children and ducks (and the odd staff car driving round the bend). We often squeak in just before the lunch bell. We get hugs from whoever is on duty as it is now definitely like coming back to family. Saying goodbye is always bittersweet but we know we can look forward to our next visit.

This is beautiful! Oh Gosh Cathy, this sounds fantastic and I can imagine why you want to keep going back every year! (I am jealous :) ) Love Scotland and how lovely that you know all the animals on the farm and the owners are like family. I love the countryside :) Beautifully scrapped!

Thank you for sharing and for playing along with MOC Day 26 Rmemberance/Tribute challenge!
