Journaling:
In the late 19th century a railway was built in the Langstraat (Longstreet) region to provide the local shoe industry with more efficient transport. The railway connected our town Waalwijk with Lage Zwaluwe in the west and Den Bosch in the east. People nicknamed the railway ‘Halvezolenlijn’, which is based on a local expression. Halve zool translates as half sole. At the time shoe soles were made out of two halves. You needed both parts to make good shoes. Someone was called ‘halvezool’ when they did something silly or stupid. As the railway was considered silly and inefficient, because it was a single track line, it became known as the half-soles-line.
Almost 100 years later service on the railway was suspended and the track dismantled. Soon after plans were developed to re-use the grounds of the old railway track. The municipalities of the Langstraat region decided to turn the old track into a 30km cycling path connecting our towns. To honour history the cycling path has been named ‘Halvezolenpad’, but it is far from silly. The cyclepath offers a great way to get from one town to the other, for both work and leisure. And all along the path remains have been restored and works of art have been installed as reminders of the railway and the shoe industry.
The statue ‘Waving mother and child’ is one of those artworks. The story reads: “Mother and child are waving goodbye to father who is travelling from Waalwijk station to the big city to sell their home produced shoes.” It is placed where the central station used to be, which is near our home. We see it every day as we cycle to school or work.
