Not being a fan of Facebook, and not a regular user at
the best of times , 2020 and Covid boredom made me
check it out in a different way than I would normally.
Before that I had only used it for my ( in person) classes
, where teachers ( photography the most recent) would
post home work and lesson plans.
Now going back many years, I did a part time course
at an Art school, and really enjoyed it, Have always done
different kinds of craft, and have always loved art in its
many forms, including a special love for pencil drawings.
Life happened , and we had to work long hours,
something had to give , and it was the Art classes.
Fast forward to early retirement ,and a chance to do
more “artsy” things.
Over the years I still crafted all sorts, including miniature
dolls houses , Even made small paintings for them , and
cross stich stuff too. Took classes in computer skills,
scrapbooked, all that stuff.
For whatever reason I landed on photography, and had
a blast .
Then did a clear out one day (October 2019) and came
across some old Art school sketches ( terrible stuff lol )
but I realized something was missing in my life, and
after a few heavy Hints , Tony gave me a year long
Online painting class, Started Jan 2020.
Lovely, - and then came Covid !
Really it should not have made a difference, but it did.,
Malta is only 60 miles from Sicily , ( across the sea )
and all of Italy suffered so much in that first wave,
It bought our fragility to light, and it also put a spotlight
on how dependent we all are on each other.
Personally I lost all motivation to do anything at all, let
alone paint.
Enter Facebook ... Many of the people taking the class
felt like me, others painted like it was just another day,
but what is the amazing thing is the community feeling that
teachers, and other people inspired.
Some teachers posted on their Facebook page, that they
gave free lessons.
Another Canadian painter, held a “ meet ” Live FB every
Tuesday, called it Ground with paint, and we painted
along if we felt like it, if not we just hung out..
It gave everyone a breathing space, a ahhh moment where
your shoulders went down, and you had fun.
Other FB initiatives were a sketchbook revival group ,were
a very nice Artist , got together about 30 different Artists,
or speakers, and for 14 days, posted 2 videos every day,
to follow along and learn something new, ,later on in the
year , when it became apparent that Covid was here to
stay ,others followed suit, and it has been the
most amazing thing to see a whole global community come
together, and give help, time, a shoulder to cry on,
encouragement, and most of all love. Always Love, to all those
that need it.

What a beautiful story! I love how you documented it.
It's so insane how the world got upside down due to a virus. I would never have thought it to be possible.
But you did a great jow telling your story. I love your take on the challenge.

I love the reflection on how painting has brought you something. I hope it filled that hole that was missing - even if it was more the community than the actual painting. Thanks for playing in my challenge!
