- My journaling is more about leading up to the day because I ran out of room to talk about the day! But I will add more journaling to a companion page.
In case you can't read it on the page:
Since he was very young we noticed that Jack’s feet, and especially his ankles, didn’t seem to be aligned properly with his legs. The soonest an orthopedic doctor would see Jack was age three, so we went for the first time then. The doctor explained that Jack had congenital bilateral pes planus (flatfoot) that was also causing overpronated ankles. The treatment was for Jack to wear customized inserts in his shoes. The doctor warned that the condition could cause some pain in his feet and lower legs as Jack got older. Another option was to consider surgery several years down the road, though this was typically only for severe cases.
For several years Jack saw the orthopedist annually and received new shoe inserts as he continued to grow. We watched him run somewhat awkwardly and trip much more often than most kids when running, but otherwise the symptoms were relatively minor. At 8 years old Jack started complaining more regularly that his feet hurt or that his legs were tired. We started noticing that his feet were becoming more callused and his shoes were wearing down and getting holes quickly. After a few meetings with his doctor to discuss it, and at Jack’s request, we finally agreed to allow him to have the surgery. He’d need two surgeries, one for each foot, and then be in a foot cast each time for two to three months.
