- JOURNALING – The Heirloom – Reflections on a Rocker: (Journaled 1/7/23) I treasure this little rocker for the history it represents. When my grandmother passed away, the wives of her three sons were tasked with cleaning out the old farmhouse. One of the runners of this old rocking chair was broken and the caned seat and back were both in disrepair so it was tossed into the rubbish bin. Later , while looking at some old photos, my mother discovered one of Grandma sitting in a rocker holding a baby with my Grandad standing behind her. It was the rocking chair now residing in the rubbish bin! My mother retrieved the rocker and took it home. Research showed it to be a folding rocking chair from the Victorian period that originally would have been upholstered. My sister found an old craftsman who said he could repair the rocker so the “treasure” was entrusted to him. It took longer than originally thought, because he had some family issues that delayed the repair, but one day he pulled up into the driveway and presented my mother with the repaired rocker. It was better than she could imagine and the repaired runner was seamless. It now resides in my living room.
