It wasn’t until I got married that I started using this online moniker. Before this, I always used a play on my maiden name but when I upgraded my last name IRL, I decided to upgrade it online as well. My husband’s father was a phys. ed. teacher and a track coach for a long time. His students and fellow teachers called him by his nickname “Shades,” which was a play on his last name, Shadell. Because I love being a Shadell and I especially love my FIL, I decided to borrow his nickname. I chose to throw the “Mama” in front because that’s the second part of how I identify myself - the mama to three crazy awesome kids. And there you have it - mama shades. Pretty soon, the rest of the Shadell clan joined in. My husband uses the name “papashades” and my SIL is on Insta as “sistashades.”
