I have such fond memories of visiting Aunt Alice who I got to go stay with
for a few weeks in the Summers since I was about the age of six. (When Mother
started having my 3 younger brothers and probably needed a big break)
Aunt Alice was a school teacher and had access to many special and wonderful
books. She would read to me at bedtime and I remember I always wanted the
same story over and over again. Lying in bed and listening to her voice as
she took me to faraway lands and adventures was so relaxing and made me go
to sleep so much easier. I always looked forward to story time at night.
She also had a cat who often had kittens and I would get to play with
them as often as I liked. She would even bring one to sleep with me at
night and I loved listening to the purring as the kitten and I cuddled.
One of the best things about visiting was that her house was on Puget
Sound right next to the beach and this was a treasure trove of adventures.
As I got older I had a small row boat to use and would hang over the front
of it with a spear and glide along looking for fish to capture. My favorite
was the Sole fish that is a bottom fish and easy to spot. (Catching fish
this way is highly illegal today.) Glad I was able to do it before that
happened.
Aunt Alice had many interesting things in her house and one of them was a
large terrarium filled with all kinds of climbing plants. It was huge and
looking into it was like viewing a jungle. She also had lots of house plants.
She had a wonderful garden full of all kinds of flowers. I still remember
the lavender she grew. She let me help her tend to it and my love of gardening was born.
