the words fierce and strong
I always knew choosing a degree in human services majoring in disability studies that I was in it because it was my true calling and passion to help those with disabilities live their best lives in their community. You certainly don’t go into the social and community services fields if you don’t have a strong passion and desire because overall it is a lower paying field of work.
For three years while I was doing my degree I thought I had post-graduation all planned out – find a job as a service coordinator at a major service provider, work for a few years then head over to Canada by the time I was 30, well that was nearly two years ago and I’m still searching for that “dream job”. Little did I know how hard it would be.
I am currently three years and two months from when I sat my final exam and just under three years from graduating. I have applied for over 250 jobs (and now stopped counting because its too depressing), most in the disability sector but some outside of it just to get a job. I have even looked outside of my original geographic boundaries but still no luck. Don’t get me wrong I am super thrilled to have been shortlisted for probably between 60 to 80 of those jobs but at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter if you end up being applicant 400 being rejected before shortlisting or whether you end up number two after an interview the result is still the same.
The one bright spot throughout all the grey times is finding all these jobs and organizations to allow me to realise that the sector is truly varied. These discoveries have truly allowed me to find what I am truly passionate about within the disability sector – making effective change at government and organizational policy level, without effective change at policy level, outcomes for the people I truly am passionate about helping won’t change. I am excited about the discoveries that I have made over the past three years and look forward to finding the “dream job” and not just a job.
I like how you split the color on the title on this layout. Congrats on getting your degree! Can't wait to hear next about you landing the dream job!!!
@pagefrocks the alpha is already like that thanks to Becca! Oh, don't worry everyone will hear once I have a job - I have a phone interview for a role this coming week so fingers crossed.
