"As a young woman, Mary Catherine Lahey (1898-1959) belonged to a club known as the Bayswater Sewing Circle. They met at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Bayswater Ave in Ottawa. Presumably these young seamstresses met to sew; to gossip; to share techniques and to exchange sewing patterns. But they also loved to host bridal showers whenever one of their members was about to marry. In the newspaper clipping below [from The Ottawa Citizen, June 10, 1922], our grandmother, here “Miss May Lahey,” is listed as one of the guests at a shower for a Miss McCaul. At least two other relations are named in this news item: “Miss Louise Finnerty,” daughter of James Finnerty and Bridget Benton; and “little Miss Nora Coleman,” daughter of Stanley Coleman and Mary Teresa Finnerty."
