St. Patricks Cathedral stands out among the modern Manhattan skyscrapers. Even though it is shorter, it has a commanding presence. We’ve been to European cathedrals, and this building lives up to those standards. We were inspired by the beautiful stained glass windows and intricate carvings.
Building the cathedral began in 1858 and was completed in 1879. Ridculed as “Hughes’ Folly,” the near-wilderness site was considered too far outside the city. It was paid for by donations from both prominent citizens as well as thousands of poor immigrants.
