Made for Summer Camp Week 5, Start a fire
Journaling:
One thing I’ve always said I want in our house is a wood-burning stove. Just imagine it, waking up on a weekend morning, lighting a fire, and letting that gentle warmth fill the room. Or coming back in the evening from a crisp autumn or winter walk with the dog and settling down in front of the glow.
We haven’t quite gotten around to installing one yet, so when we discovered that the little cottage we’d rented for the weekend actually had an open fireplace, I was thrilled. Robert made a quick detour to the gas station to pick up some firewood, and we were ready. We stacked the logs just so, following all the “rules” of fire-making, and soon the flames were dancing.
Unfortunately, the damper had other plans, it didn’t work properly, and instead of drifting up the chimney, the smoke billowed straight into the room. Not quite the magical scene I had pictured.

After a bit of frantic airing out, things settled down, and the rest of the evening was exactly what I’d hoped for: Roffe stretched out on the floor in front of the fire, us curled up on the sofa, the warmth slowly filling the space.
We even ended up moving the dining table just to get a clear view of the fireplace. In the end, the whole little adventure made me wonder if I really do want a stove in our own house—but honestly, I think it would still be worth it for moments like that.
