I am sure when Pete was born at the Shoalhaven Hospital in Nowra his Mother had no idea that her baby would be her only son to make it to fifty. I am sure that, as I did for my own children, she had great plans for her boys. Dreams of how their lives would turn out.
Rod, the middle boy, passed first. He had a cerebral hemorrhage brought on by drug use. Dale, the oldest, passed four years after Rod. Sadly, he committed suicide. Most likely related to drug use also.
I know Pete tries not to focus on the fact that he is the only one left. I don't blame him. How awful it must be to know that the only people left of your nuclear family unit are yourself and your elderly mother. How hard must it have been to bury your two brothers and your father before the age of 40.
The upside, if there is one, is that Pete left Nowra. He joined the Army and made himself a career. His Dad had remarried after his parents divorced and he has two half brothers from that marriage.
However, Grant, the younger of the two has also fallen into the drug trap of the region. Mathew hasn't though. He is a manager for a large hydraulics company.
Matthew and Pete are close. They are lucky that they have each other. They are closely bonded by the losses they have faced. Being 1400kms apart makes it difficult at times but they never pass up a chance to see each other, if only for a drink.
From my perspective... I am glad that Pete was much younger than his older brothers and was closer in age to Matt. I am glad that he did not follow in their footsteps and that he joined the military. If he hadn't and he had fallen into the black hole that can be Nowra he most likely would never have become my husband. I hope he is as proud of himself as I am that he overcame his beginnings to become a successful career soldier of 23 years., One who has deployed to multiple war zones, gained a trade and made it to Warrant Officer before he retired.**
Beautifully done.. so sorry for your husband's family tradgedy but so glad he came out on the other side. Thank you both for your service to our country. Glad he is still close with his half brother. It is nice to have some family. Love the then and now photos. Beautifully scrapped.
