Persimmons

Journaling:
September 27, 2025 | Our neighbor generously let’s us have the persimmons from the tree flanking our shared driveway. My son picked them and the ripest ones I did pulp up on the 18th (the hard way). The ones not quite ripe I put in a paper bag with an apple and checked on them in a week. I was met with the most heavenly vanilla/floral smell. I knew they were perfectly ripe. I don’t have a food mill but I found a flour sifter worked like a charm! I was able to get a full quart from it near effortlessly. Afterward I took the pulp/seed leftover & gave them a quick push thru the a sifting screen. It yielded another cup or so. All in all I got a full quart of pulp ready for making persimmon bread! | resembles: squishy pumpkins | smells: heavenly

Love the gingham areas, the color that goes with the persimmons so well...just so gorgeous! The stitching looks great with it.

Thank you ladies! @cfile How interesting! What a fun idea to use them in a salad - I'll have to try that one day when I get a hold of one of those larger kind of persimmons. The native, wild variety, are about the size of very large cherries, have huge seeds and are quite mushy when actually ripe so not much good for slicing. But they sure make some delicious bread!

I think the ones I eat are the "sharon fruit" style.. that is what is down in Va Beach.. rarely do I find the deep orange like you are showing (although I have never seen them that small.. our deep orange ones are the size of a regular tomato). My Filipino friends introduced me to the persimmons like 15 years ago.. the Sharon Fruit are harder and don't get as mushy.. those are what I slice and stick in with my salad. Hubby likes them too :) I have never had them as bread. I bet that would be yummy!
 
we love persimmons, how special that your neighbour grows them. I've never seen a persimmon tree.
