JOURNALING: As part of their “Summer of Bugs” from May 16 thru September 27, 2015, the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Columbus Ohio hosted an exhibition of David Rogers’ “Big Bugs”. Upon approaching the conservatory main building from the parking lot, visitors are greeted by this huge ant. My sister and I were going to attend a glass blowing demonstration and were unaware of the bug display. It was fun to see them again. We originally saw the exhibit several years previously when they were displayed at Innis Gardens. 9/18/15
These ants are created of bent willow on armature. They have carved red cedar eyes and weigh 725 pounds. They measure in at 25 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 10 feet high.
Fun Facts: There are roughly ten thousand trillion ants worldwide but none in Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland and Hawaii. Colony odor helps ants recognize companions and drive off strangers.
