Description
My World and Welcome to it... That is going to be the title of my Sept. Art Journal piece. [It was also an American TV Show title from 1969 (and a favorite of mine) with William Windom as the main character who was a cartoonist (based on the humor & cartoons of James Thurber) and his cartoon would come to life into the TV Sitcom.]

Doing this first part of "My World" beginning with birth, I started reminiscing over my childhood. (I do that a lot anyway) but I just went through and picked out some of the highlights. I was born in 1961 and so I found on the internet a list of Popular TV shows, Movies and songs from 1961 to use as my beginning timeline.

The TV with the NBC Peacock represents something I remember my father saying all the time... "When you were born, color TV's just came out. We bought ours as we thought we wouldn't be going to movies much. At that time there were only 8 or 9 channels and most shows were in Black & White. Every night when NBC would show the peacock, your Mother & I would run into the living room just so we could see the color on the peacock!!" - Funny story but I remembered it.

They also bought the 1962 Starfire that year, which would turn out to be the first car that I would drive. Dad took lots of slides, and then in 1964 they bought an 8mm movie camera. The "Box with kids" in it represents the first movie they made with it. Dad wanted to play with trick photography. The box was a "Kellog's Variety Box" (cereal box carton they got from the grocery) and got all the kids in the neighborhood to come over and join in the fun. The opening of the movie shows my uncle "dragging this heavy box" across the lawn.. then a few seconds go by and then at least 10 kids one by one start coming out of the box. I jumped out like a bunny! (Cute memory) Anyway, when the box got empty of all the kids, my Uncle picked up the box like it was a feather and walked away!. I love that 8mm movie and still watch it over and over today.

Dad fixed everything... Besides anything that broke in the house, from TV's to appliances to cars, he also like to build things like furniture. He finished our basement, and in addition renovated my grandparents house. Dad was an Engineer with Grumman as an occupation and was involved with the LEM program and helped us get to the moon. He worked on the radar portion, as well as many other things for Grumman until he retired.

Mom cultivated her interest in Bird watching in the late 1960's and went on to teaching some of my elementary school classes, then became editor of the local Audobon Chapter's newsletter, and also their President for many years.

My brother and I had a well rounded childhood. Our family was always over for BBQ's and parties. My father BBQ'd all year long even if there was snow outside. We went to the beach to swim in the ocean and to collect seashells during the daytime, and sometimes at night we would go to walk the boardwalk, go to a show, listen to music, roller skate, square dance or whatever was going on at the time.

For vacations we would see historical sites, and go camping. We were taught to believe in ourselves, have courage, be brave, and Love one another. I am blessed to have had the childhood I had.

That reflection of the past has made me what I am in the present.
