      Wall paper and carpet will have adquire years of nicotine smell, so if you truly want the smell out you are going to have to pull both. Even though I am not a big essential oils person, I have to say they do help a lot after you remove the carpet, padding and wall paper. Is your fireplace brick? You can make a mix of the oils and water in a spray bottle (mist preferably) and spray the outside bricks they will absorb the essential oils and keep giving you that smell for weeks to come.
