Journaling:
While I had the keys to Dad’s house, I would never show up and use the key without himknowing I was coming. I wanted to surprise him for his 65th Birthday. I called up hisfriend Ron Garza who lived across the street, to assist in pulling off this surprise.I asked Ron to ask Dad to drive to the airport to “pick up his friend”, as Ron’s caralways had stuff in it. Dad would “buy” that request. So I flew from Atlanta to Orlando. When I arrived, I put a bow on my head, and hung a card around my neck. I went to theairport arrival area outside as Dad always drove around instead of parking. I figuredRon would meet me, however no Ron, and with that Dad was driving by. I yelled “YO” andDad stopped, looked at me, and then started to drive again. I yelled again and went tothe car. With that Dad rolled the front passenger window down and yelled at me “Whatare you doing here?” I said Surprise! It was not connecting with Dad, and he said hewas there to pick up “Ron’s Friend”...I said I am Ron’s friend!. He said again No! We arehere to pick up Ron’s friend! I said again Dad, I am Ron’s friend! With that Ron comesfrom inside the airport after using the facilities! We all laughed and I would notever have been able to pull off that surprise for Dad without Ron.
That was 1995. Sadly, the last time I spoke with Ron was in 2012 after Dad passed away.On 12/21/2014, I received a phone call from an old neignbor of Ron & Dad’s and I wastold Ron too had just passed away. “Frick & Frack” are back together now. The memory of this surprise always makes me smile.
Oh my, this is just the sweetest journaling! What a funny story about the airport confusion!!! How wonderful that you were able to pull off that surprise for his birthday. I'm sorry they have passed on, but what a wonderful memory and tribute page. that was indeed a very special moment. Thanks for participating in the challenge!
