What do Romanians celebrate on their December 1st National Day?
The short answer is 'unification and freedom', and the theme is probably a common one among many other countries in the world.
For Romanians, December 1st is the Great Union Day. On this day in 1918, during the reign of king Ferdinand I, Romania made of Moldova and Wallachia at the time – was united with Transylvania, Crisana, Banat and the Maramures area.
The unification happened in Alba Iulia, were the unification declaration was read during a public event, attended by over 100,000 Romanians. The declaration was read by Vasile Goldis, Romanian academician and politician.
December 1 is a free day in the country and in capital Bucharest it is usually celebrated with a military parade in BucharestGreat Union Day is marked by a large military parade in the capital, Bucharest. Speeches will be made in Bucharest and Alba Iulia, where the declaration of union was first read out. Elsewhere, local events will remember the Romanians who lost their lives in World War I. In recent years, various city halls like to organize concerts to celebrate the day, turning this more into a popular celebration.
This is such an interesting story! And love the photo of the airplanes trailing the coloured smoke, and your shadowing on the corners is amazing. Love the simple treatment with the red buttons and the rows of red stitching. Thanks for playing along with my challenge!
