Journaling reads:
No one could have predicted that this sabbatical trip would be the last we took or that the friends we were with would soon have to love us from afar. When we transferred from North Tulsa to our new appointment in Norman, Oklahoma, all was right with the world. There was only one more trip we would take - and that would be as a family - before life blew up in our faces and turned our world upside down and inside out. The memories of Greece, Turkey, and Rome are wonderful and beautiful, a gift of love from the Master.
My mother came to stay with the kids while we were gone - the one and only time she has been able to see them or John - due to financial constraints. She lived in Washington State on a small fixed income and our income was enough but left little to spare, even then. If the trip were not part of our ministry, we would never have been able to go. Justin had some problems because of the move, made just three months prior, so the school recommended we keep him home during that time and they would make sure he got his work. Momma worked with him to get it all done and they had a blast going places and doing things together. When we returned we home schooled for the rest of the year. This turned out to be a fabulous year all around as far as family life goes. We spent lots of time with the kids, Justin was able to finally adjust, and we found a way for him to overcome the challenges of ADHD without medication - and when he went back to school the next year, he was actually ahead of the norms.
Looking back, John was happy, energetic, and at peace. He loved our ministry, had many friends, and knew he was a man of worth, not monetarily, but in terms of his life. The community looked up to and respected him. He truly made a positive mark on life in Norman. The man who had taken his GED rather than stay in school had proved to himself that he really could and did matter and that he could stand tall knowing that his labor made a real difference. He grew into his potential between 2003 and 2005. It was a thing of beauty and joy to behold.
While we were on the Footsteps of Paul tour, people discovered or became reacquainted with the vital, witty, charming man God created him to be. He kept people entertained and engaged while we traveled and took thousands of pictures that we shared immediately because we had our laptop and rechargeable batteries along. When everyone else’s camera died or was full, ours was still up and humming. We came back blessed and refreshed, with sermon material enough to last for years. I know that man is still in there somewhere, but I sure wish he would come out to play a lot more than he does. I miss him.
