STORIES TO TELL | by Amber LaBau
I am downstairs in the basement and I can hear Claire coming downstairs to play. The stairs are right above me and I can tell that it’s Claire coming down the stairs by the sound of her footsteps. They are light and quick and bouncy, almost as if she has springs for feet. She doesn’t come down to the playroom very often and even though the details are different, the routine is always the same. She immediately grabs the pink shopping cart and shops for what she wants to play with at that moment. Sometimes she fills the cart with groceries and makes elaborate meals in the kitchen area. Sometimes she shops for clothes and changes all of the outfits on her Barbie dolls. Today, though, she fills her cart with an odd assortment of items. In her cart are two Lalaloopsies, a My Little Pony, a doll’s hair dryer and microphone, all neatly arranged on the small blanket that belongs to her American Girl horse. She also added a doll’s shoe, but didn’t notice that it fell through the shopping cart. She doesn’t stay to play today, but without a word, takes the cart upstairs. I always love watching her play and wonder what she’s thinking about.
