Dodo brain here cut her finger last weekend (a week ago Saturday), and today I was able to get the stitches out. No more bulking bandage on my finger! I'm down to a small compression bandage. I can't bend the whole finger yet - just the bottom knuckle, but I can now use it to type with again. No more horrible typos in my posts anymore! Woohoo!

just had to tell someone... ;-)

Do they still cut them out, and then pull the string? I've only had ones that over time go away. That a good thing that they are out, and you can slowly use your finger again!

Yea for getting the stitches out and for being able to type again! It would drive me bonkers not to be able to type lol so I bet you're thrilled! Plus it's just nice not to have stitches. :) How long will you have the compression bandage? Hopefully not too long!

Yeah!!! I'm glad you are getting better! Do you have a good story on how you cut it?
Yup. I was cutting up avocado skins to put in in the compost. I was using a small serrated knife, and it hit one of the bumps in the skin as I was slicing and jumped over and got the side of my finger and part of the nail. The doctor told me that knife injuries by avocado rank up there with one of the top ER visits for knife/food related incidents. It's the tough skin, soft center and huge pit that's the downfall. Who knew? They're such innocent looking things!

Yup. Thankfully it doesn't hurt - I'm always afraid of that. I'm such a wimp...

For five more days. They couldn't stitch the flap onto the finger since it was too thin, so they just tacked it down. The compression bandage helps to push it all together.

The funny thing about the typing... I only use three fingers (and thumb) on my right hand to type with since I am missing part of my middle finger (another story there), so learning how to type with three fingers on my left really wasn't that hard. Now I'm just used to doing that and it's weird switching back.
Don't you love all these gory details? :backing

Awesome! So glad you just needed stiches. A few years ago I cut my finger deep enough that I cut the tendon.... needed surgery then rehab after. No fun being it was my right hand and point finger.

@Sokee - eek! That must've been painful! I totally understand the right hand rehab thing. Not a fun experience! Glad you're over it!

Oh Jan!! Yuck but thank goodness the stitches are out!! A few years ago I managed to slice my three middle fingers cutting a bagel with the big bread knife. I got 6 stitches on my middle finger. It's the worst! I'm retroactively cringing for you!!! :( We should just eat out all the time, right????

What is strange is it didn't hurt at all! I was rushing and drying a wine glass I just washed and the stem broke away from the top of the glass and the broken stem went right in my finger it was so quick, and I did not feel any pain. They realized my tendon was severed when I could not bend my finger. So they never did any stiches in the ER as they set up my appointment right away with the surgeon, I saw him the next morning and then the morning after that they did the repairs.

I'm waiting.....:peekin

Yep, right behind you @bestcee.
@QuiltyMom we need the rest of the details, you can't just tease us, with a snippet and run.
Ugh. It's rather gross. I was assembling and IKEA camping cot for a guest to sleep on while she was visiting from out of town. It collapsed while I had my weight on it and crushed off the top 1/2" of my middle right finger, severing two nerves in the process. They couldn't reattach it because there aren't any blood vessels in the tip of the finger.

So, I don't use the finger at all because 1) I experienced hyper-sensitivity in the finger and couldn't handle anything touching it for years (the desensitizing therapy was painful, to say the least), and 2) I lost my ability to hold onto things properly. My whole grip is off. For example, if I hold onto a glass using the finger, along with the others, it will slide out of my hand because I'm missing that 1/2". But if I hold it without the finger, I'm fine. And even though it was just a fingertip I experienced all the things that amputees deal with, like phantom pain and stuff. I had phantom itching. It was really strange.

So, I learned to type without it, among other things. It's forced this righty to do some things lefty, like spreading lotion on my face. It's amazing just how much of all your fingers you use, and you really have to adapt things without it.

That's crazy Jan! @QuiltyMom Really cool how you've adapted without it though. Thanks for sharing!

I've only had staples in my head once (swingset pole, holding a hammock came down on me), so I'm always curious about accidents. And now DH is a nurse, so my curiosity has grown.

Omgosh this whole thread gives me the shivers lol Glad you are on the mend, Jan! I've never had stitches *knock wood* but I did take 3 out of my son when he was about 12. Hope you continue to heal quickly!!

Who knew avocados were so dangerous! Glad you have the stitches and bulky bandage gone. Hope it heals up quick for ya! :)
