Xmas must-haves | Pad Patter 21.12

Growing up we always had a Swedish smorgasbord for Christmas Eve, followed by a dessert buffet after Christmas Eve service and opening of tree presents. We'd have potato sausage, boiled potatoes with white sauce, pickled herring, pickled cucumbers, Swedish brown beans, a special Swedish cheese, rye and Christmas breads, cheeses, and my mom's green jello salad (obviously not Swedish!!). I try to do the same, and we have for a while, but since I can't eat meat anymore we don't make the sausage and substitute Swedish meatballs (this year I bought frozen ones from ikea. Bad me). I also won't do the brown beans and jello salad.

Christmas Day we spend with my in-laws, so it's whatever they feel like fixing to eat, and that's fine with me! Since they moved into a retirement community we eat in the dining room (amazing food!) and they'll have a huge buffet to graze from. Gotta love it!
Not bad you, the Ikea ones are pretty good (to me anyway) You lost me on jello salad _ how can wibbly wobbly jello make a salad? Like spoons of it go in a fruit salad? ?

We just called it jello salad. Mom would put whipped cream and crushed pineapple into lime jello, maybe some other things, so it was light and fluffy. My nephews loved it because it was super sweet. I always passed it up for the same reason. I like my jello plain!

Hello fellow Swede!!! My Gramma made a huge swedish spread on Christmas Eve too!! Swedish Rye bread and Swedish meatballs - YUM!!!! I so miss that!! My cousin Robin has the recipes and she makes the bread every. year and she brought me a few loaves!!! I'm going to make the meatballs next year.

We've simplified too. My mom has been catering for the main meal a lot lately and it makes it much more enjoyable. My fave part is the appetizers ... we love to pick at all the different dishes and hang out, have a drink and talk together. Like @jk703 mentioned ... the appetizers are definitely my fave too!
Each of us is bringing an appetizer or two and then a dessert if we want. I'm on Pinterest right now trying to decide what I want to bring. YUM!
