Today is World Photography Day. A day to celebrate the creation of the daguerreotype. A day to celebrate history in photos and create new ones.
So, how did you get into photography?
What camera are you shooting with the most?
And the most important, do you choose a phone based on its camera?

I was encouraged to take photos as a kid. My parents got me a cheap camera and let me take photos but then my Mom was a scrapbooker before people even knew what it was! She took lots of photos as well and encouraged me. Of course, we didn't take as many photos in those days because of the cost of film but I continued to take photos as did my mother for all those years.

I shoot with any of my 3 Canon cameras. All have a place that I can get to them quickly. Distance shots, I used the Rebel T5. If I want to take a camera with me when I go away (either on a walk or in my purse), I use the SX740. The other one is a SX540. The SX540 and Rebel are easier to download photos so I tend to use them more.

No, I do not choose a phone for the camera since I don't use the camera that often. I cannot get good photos since I can't hold the phone steady enough. I need bulk not slimness to my camera when taking photos.

Happy World Photography Day!

I think I was into photography in some way since I was a kid. I loved looking at my Mom's photo albums and started making my own scrapbooks and photo albums in elementary school. But I never thought of it as art or a hobby when I was young. I just loved recording my life and reminiscing. Then the first digiscrap forum where I hung out beginning in 2007 began offering various classes, including some on the topic of photography, and I got interested. Next, John Greengo at CreativeLIVE demystified the exposure triangle for me and I bought my first DSLR and I joined Clickinmoms and nearly dropped digital scrapbooking for a few years while I was obsessed with photography and considering going pro.

I still own my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T1i, which I bought in 2010, and it's my good camera. The height of my time with it was around 2016 though, and for the last couple of years I've only used it maybe once a month. I still feel a bit sad about that, but whenever I think I'm going to get back into photography, it doesn't last. I think, at least partly, that was because my favorite subject to photograph are people, especially my kids when they were young, but now they don't want me photographing them every day.

I still snap photos every day using my iPhone. But they're just snapshots of the scene on my daily walk or what I made for dinner or a paper I want to file in my digital journal before throwing out. Occasionally I take stealthy snapshots of my kids while we're playing a game or hanging out chatting. :)

I've only chosen two phones so far ever, and no, I didn't choose because of the camera. I chose iPhone because I already had an iMac and it made sense. I replaced that iPhone 4 with the iPhone 6 in 2015 and I'm nearly ready to replace that one. So this question is so timely for me. I have been considering the possibility of switching to android. I've watched maybe a dozen comparison videos on YouTube. I'm pretty sure I'm staying with iPhone. And maybe not even the top of the line. They came out with a new SE this year, which is nearly the same as the 11, same chip, but not as many camera features. But getting a phone with the same power and longevity at a much lower price point matters more to me right now.

Hmm, maybe I should go celebrate now by picking up my poor neglected DSLR.

My mom took photos of us growing up at events and parties, and we had photo albums around to look at if we wanted to. I started taking my own photos (but still film) in high school & college (my college roomies & I went on a Spring Break trip one year and then made triple copies of the photos we took --- OMG!) but didn't scrapbook until after I graduated from college.

I've never particularly focused (ha!) on getting better at photography; I use photos to tempt/convince people to read my stories not the other way around. I got a DSLR in 2005 and then a point & shoot a couple years later. I didn't have a cell phone until 2002 after graduating from college & I don't think I had a cell phone with a camera until a few years after that. I had a few other cameras here & there until one got wet and died in 2012 and I sold the DSLR to a friend in 2014 or 2015. I haven't had a camera since.

Having a good camera is the primary factor in what kind of cell phone I buy. I hate talking on the phone, don't text much, and would rather check the Internet, forums, etc. on my 17 in. laptop vs. a tiny cell phone screen. Besides taking photos, the only other thing I use my phone for regularly is TikTok. I have an iPhone X and the photos it takes are decent enough.

I've been thinking about getting an actual camera again so we'll see what happens after 2020 is over and we get back to doing things in real life with real people again.

I got the bug from my paternal grandfather - he always carried his Brownie box camera everywhere. I'm delighted to say that I now own it. Unfortunately, he passed away when I was 10, but I'm sure we would have had SO many pictures of our childhood had he not. He like to take pictures of funny things - not just people. He and Granny traveled a lot (just around the state, mostly) but he had some funny pictures of signs. One I remember was "Welcome to _______ (I don't remember)- Home of x amount of people and a few grouches." He would stop the car to take a picture of a sign.

My first SLR was a Pentax and that thing was a workhorse. I still have it and it's SO heavy! I used to carry ir around everywhere. My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel and then I got a Nikon D3300.

Yes, I got my last phone because it had 3 lenses on it. I was lucky enough to get one of the iPhone 11 Pro's right after they came out! I absolutely LOVE it!! A good camera on a phone has always been priority for me.

So, how did you get into photography?
I always remember taking photos. I remember waiting to get my photos developed! I would buy those little disposable cameras when I was a kid.

What camera are you shooting with the most?
My phone. Although I do have goals to use my Nikon more often. I've taken classes and learned how to take in manual mode and really like to do that...it's just a matter of what I have on hand and what is easiest at the moment...which is usually my phone.

And the most important, do you choose a phone based on its camera?
No...because I always think I'll used my Nikon for good photos.

So, how did you get into photography?
As a teen, and then in college, I love taking pictures, even selfies then! Just sort of fell into it, I guess. No one else really in my family before me was into photos.

What camera are you shooting with the most?
I have mostly switched to my iphone. I'm actually considering selling my big camera. I just don't lug it out often enough. I use my phone camera for everything now.

And the most important, do you choose a phone based on its camera?
I do now... only since it has become my go to camera. Also, because I tend to keep my phones for over 2-3 years at a time, so I'll splurge so it will last a bit longer.

I got an iPhone11 Pro Max for Christmas just because of its awesome camera. I will say that I now use this camera more than my other one, which is a Canon PowerShot SX530 HS. I think I've used the Canon maybe five times all year.

HA! My first smartphone was an iPhone 6 that I bought in May/June of 2015. I bought an iPhone b/c that's what my son and GK had so it seemed the smart thing to do. I love the photos it takes, although my family is always complaining about me getting in their faces b/c I like to take close-ups. I plan on replacing it with the SE (2019) model vs. the 11 Pro due to the cost of the 11 Pro. I use my phone to text with my GK and take photos ... nope, not spending $1,000 on a phone.

I got my first camera in 7th or 8th grade. It used B&W 126 film (no cartridge, had to load it in a darkened room), but wasn't a Kodak Instamatic. It was a boxy rectangular camera, and I don't believe it had a flash or used flashcube. I eventually got a Kodak 110 camera, then a Canon non-zoom 35MM P&S which I loved except objects seemed so far away even when I was standing relatively close. Nikon came out with point and shoot 35MM zoom camera in the 80s ... it was crazy expensive, but it ZOOMED!!!

I didn't like the photos from the Nikon as well as the photos from the Canon so when the Nikon slipped off a lawn chair into the grass and died a few years later I replaced it with a Canon P&S zoom, then a film Rebel. I think my first digital camera was the Canon G3, then I got the original DRebel, then a bunch of P&S digi-cameras (Canon and Panasonic). I replace my original DRebel with the Rebel T4i.

I still have my two older Rebels, plus a few of the digi P&S. On my "someday" list is getting my mom's old Brownie box camera cleaned, buying some film for it, and shooting photos of my GK.
