when they say "Hello, my name is..." You respond by "Hi, Good Morning, How are you?" It's coming from left field for them because nobody is nice to them.... and it takes them a few seconds to react.... and their reaction is "Hi, you know you called So and So, correct?". LOL!!!!! Be nice to everyone, even the customer support people need a pick me up!

At drive-thru windows, they ask "May I take your order?" My husband always responds "Hi, how are you?" and waits for them to answer. Awkward silence every single time! He also says "thank you" to the gas pump and ATM. 20 years with the man, I know all the quirks.

I always try to be nice. I want people to treat me the same way, though a different job. It's just courtesy! If I'm upset, I try to remember that it isn't their fault. That part happens to me a lot at work, and it's not fun! I will have to try the "how are you?" sometime! :) I do always try to say the please and thank you. Espcially at the pumps here in NJ... we don't pump our gas, so they are people! :giggle

I always say thank you and have a great day. Even when they say it before I do, I make sure to respond with a "you too!" My hubby does not . . . he's just not attentive that way, but having worked in retail, it's so nice to have someone actually see you and talk to you instead of acting like you are a non-entity.

Yes!. Catch more flies with honey and all that. Its true, I always make sure I know its not them at fault and compliment helpful behavior. Even taking names and making sure I give positive feedback by person in any feedback requested.

ITA @Lindzee :)
I try to be nice because, well, I should be nice. :) I also warn CS people "I will probably use the word 'you' when talking, but I really mean 'the company you work for' so please don't take it personally. I know you didn't overcharge my cable bill this month so thanks for helping me fix this!" I want it known that I don't blame the person who is on the other end of the line for the mistake, ya know?

@Dalis this post just puts a pep in my step! I adore being kind and when others go out of their way to be kind. I used to take my Sunday school class out to the corner, and we would wave and smile just to get the driver's to wave or smile back...We collected smiles. We even had one couple come into church and they are still there today! so so precious!

I am especially nice to tele sales people. Didn't always used to be, just said no, without letting them finish, because it really used to annoy me they would phone me up to try and make me buy something I have no earthly use for.
But then my friend was in desperate need of a job, and got one as a tele marketer, and she said the first day she was in tears ,after even a few hours, because people were so rude. That made me think-a lot- so now I let them finish, and they get a "thank you, but I am sorry, I am not interested in your services. " usually I get a thank you back, and sometimes even a enjoy your day.

I also make sure that I know the waiter's name. I want to call them by name when I talk to them instead of "hey you!".

GASP! You don't!?

Nope. :giggle There are pumps, but in NJ, you aren't allowed to pump your own gas. I think there are 2 states that have this law. I love it. I do pump gas when I have to in other states... but usually someone is with me, like DH or my Dad or someone. I'm not very good at it!

With that in mind, I always say please and thank you to the guy when he takes my money! :)

I used to listen to the telemarketers. But it really annoys me when I say no thank you, we aren't interested. And they go on with another tactic. It got to where I gave them three chances to take my friendly no. If they tried for a fourth one I just hung up. Now we are on the no call list and we STILL get calls. Usually we ignore the phone or we pick it up and hang it back up again. Or we listen to see if it's someone or a recording. If it takes them two or three seconds to answer our hello they get a hang up. And I hate those calls where they immediately put you on hold to wait for one of their available workers. If they want to come into my home and interrupt my day they had better be there when I say hello. Wow, this really makes me sound mean and ornery, doesn't it? I don't mean to be.

The calls that really get to me are the ones where someone says, you are having trouble with your computer and we want this and this and this information from you so we can help you fix it. Uhhhmmmmmm......my computer is just fine thank you. And I don't give anyone that kind of information. Sorry.

Okay....I'll try to be nicer when I talk to them. Well...I'm always nice...I'll try to be extra nicer. :) I like what someone said about saying hi and how is their day going. That's good.

Just being kind means so much to people. I don't understand why it's so hard for some but I have to remember that's where they're coming from. They need the kindness even more I'm sure.

Love this post :-)

Here in New Zealand we always say thank you to the bus drivers. It always makes me smile when even the scruffiest bunch of teenagers get off calling out "thank you driver", "thank you", "Thanks!" to the front of the bus.

I have a habit of always asking people how they are doing and telling them to "have a good one" (i.e. have a good day). I can't help it. It is just the Alabama in me. It is funny up here in Wisconsin when the person on the receiving end gets thrown off. I either end up in some sort of mini conversation or awkward silence if the person doesn't know how to respond.
