wacom styluses (/styli?!) question

So DD wants a Wacom stylus pen to use with her iPad (5th gen) and I'm pretty clueless about them but I know there are plenty of digi savvy people here!
So I have a general question:
she has shown me 2 different ones - the Tip Smart and the Ink Smart - I was under the impression that these needed to be used with a mat thing (Wacom Intuos or Bamboo - the rectangle base part) for digital notetaking or drawing - is that wrong? they can work without that?
If anyone has either of those stylus pens, feel free to give me a review or feedback on them - like the battery life is rubbish or not, etc. Or if you have a different brand - she showed me one called Adonit Dash 3 as well but I haven't heard of the brand so I'm a bit wary.

Anyway, thanks in advance!

I just bought a stylus, Justine. I saw this one reviewed on iDrop and they highly recommended it. I'm just starting to dabble with Procreate, so I've only used it a couple of times. The price was right (I wasn't going to pay Apple's price right out of the gate) and all of the reviews I read were very positive. It came with a charger.

I don't own one (yet) but I'm hoping my hubby is going to get me one for my birthday in August so I can start playing with ProCreate on my iPad. If you're looking at Styli ( :giggle ) for $99, wouldn't you rather just get an Apple Pencil? I saw some of those for just under a hundred dollars on Amazon, but they might be older versions? I know nothing. Lol!

Otherwise I sure do like the price of the one Cheryl posted! :agree

yeah i know nothing either, but much as i'd love to, the apple pen is waaay out of our price range (it's $198 for the 2nd gen one here) but i found Cheryl's one for $50 on our aussie amazon for $49 which sounds fine so i'd be interested in hearing more as you get the hang of it Cheryl - thanks!

Karen, do you subscribe to iDrop? https://www.idropnews.com/ - It's not ALL Apple/Mac but the majority of it is. I've gotten invaluable information and "heads-ups" from them and have a lot of faith in them. There's no way I'm going to pay the Apple stylus price - maybe later if I become proficient, but this one seems to be fine for learning. This is the pen that iDrop recommended.

That's a great price, Justine! I'll keep you posted as I learn more. I literally just pushed in on and it started right up. The point is probably a medium tip - it says fine tip, but I really like it.

I've never heard of that site before, but I'll go check it out! I love when you get good "heads up" tips from a trusted source! :) That's like TLP for me, but who doesn't love more good info!? :agree

I've been subscribed to them for years, Karen and have found out a lot of things that are coming along that I wouldn't have known otherwise. PC World is another great online source. I got their magazine for years and subscribe online now. Between those two, I feel like I keep pretty well informed on tech things. It is like TLP. :yup

I just got a Wacom pad for Christmas, but I haven't been working too much with it. It seems my husband likes mine better than his old one, and I constantly find it hooked up to his computer! LOL

I just started using Procreate on my iPad Air 2 so I looked into styluses before coming on vacation. I think the Apple Pencil only works with the 6th generation iPads. I’ve heard good things about the Adonit brand stylus (Pixel and Dash) and apparently the Wacom Fineline and Bamboo Sketch will also work on the 5th generation. I wasn’t able to get the Adonit one locally at the time but will try to get it when we get home.

<snicker>Am I an adolescent or what?? Everytime someone mentions procreate - all I think of is as in making babies! LOLOLOL

I did think it was an odd name choice, I understand it's like a professional creative app but I'm sure with their think tanks they could of come up with something else!
