Villains. You can’t have a hero without a villain. Do you have a favorite villain in literature or cinema? Is there a villain that you just cannot stand and despise with every ounce of your being? I actually have two villains that I think really steal the show and are a delight to watch while they are on screen. The first is James Moriarty from the BBC Sherlock series played by Andrew Scott. He does such an excellent job in the role. The other villain I enjoy is Alice Morgan from the BBC series Luther played by Ruth Wilson. Early in the series I was pretty indifferent but as the series went on, I always looked forward to her being in an episode.
And now for the villain that makes me absolutely crazy is Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter the books not the movies (although Imelda Staunton does a good job.) The literary Professor Umbridge is just an absolute horror. She was the worst of the worst in my opinion.

So do you have a favorite villian? Or one that you just despise?

Well, depending on what you believe - Professor Snape from Harry Potter. We are led to believe that he's a villain all along, but then...

I'm hardly ever a villain person.

Oooh I would have to say my favorite is The Joker, particularly Heath Ledger's Joker. Followed by Hannibal Lecter or Annie Wilkes.

Maleficent and Cruella are some of my favs. I can’t stand professor umbridge in the movies even though she did a good job. I’m on the fence about Bellatrix, not sure if I love or hate her.

She did do a good job as professor Umbridge but the character is way more over the top in the books.

Well, I suppose I'd like to consider her a full blown heroine, but she is quite villainous - stealing her sister's beau and marrying him, going after Ashley when he's married to Melanie, who is supposed to be her friend, and she is ruthless in business. Of course, I'm talking about Scarlett O'Hara. Even with all those horrible things, I still find her an interesting and compelling character.

I love Villanelle from the Series Killing Eve. Never was there such a serial / contract killer.
If you have not seen the series I definitely recommend it.

It's a great question. I can't think of a villain I admire.

I prefer when the good guys are all good and the villains are all bad. I hate when I can identify with the villain because of what they have been through and then feel for them. I had a huge struggle with the Mentalist - because I really liked the character the lead played - but the way he would lie and manipulate his friends and colleagues was disappointing.

I haven't seen any of the previously mentioned to comment specifically but seeing the villains point of view & what made her in Maleficent was really good. But the first season of You messed with my head, I couldn't figure out which side of the hero or villain scale the main guy (
creepy stalker protagonist narrator guy
fell on.

Not a fan of villains. I love a good underdog plot. :byay Closest one might come to a liked villian from me would be
V for Vendetta ( not really a villian, leans toward of a champion of independence to me, sorta?) and ironically current.:giggle:backing
YUP. I always cheer for the good guys.

I'm completely not into villains (or the stereotypical bad boy). They seem similar to haunted houses, horror movies, etc. to me and I don't "get" wanting to be scared or rooting for the bad guy. I'm way too much of an Enneagram 1. :giggle

My eldest, on the other hand, who is also a goody-two-shoes like me :beat villains: loves watching them, loves writing them, loves reading them.

OH gosh yes to Professor Umbridge. I HATED her in the books and therefore my hatred carried over into the movies... I almost always want to skip that one if we are watching the series again.

I love Jack Nicholson in The Shining "Here'sssssss Johnny!" Nicholson plays such a wonderful villain in so many roles. I guess he's more of a bad boy, in most of his roles. "As Good As It Gets" is one of my top favorite movies and the other characters in the movie hated him. He was really an old softie.
