We didn't have VCRs when I was growing up. But we got one when our kids were young and have been thru several over the years. We have a TON of movies on tapes. Have been trying to replace our favorites with DVDs and Blue Rays the past few years. Have family videos on VHS too. And we had the rewinders, also. They never seemed to last very long though.
I grew up with black and white tv. Color tv came out when I was about 16 years old. It was cool to get to babysit for people who owned color tvs.
And I had a great grandma who was from Norway. I don't remember her myself, and I was very young when she died. But the story about her and watching tv has always been one of my favorites. She spoke with a Norwegian accent. The yuh sound for J's. And when she saw a tv her comment was...I just (yust) don't understand how they get so many people in that little tiny box!! I so wish I had known her!
Anyway...I'm thinking we should buy a back up VCR and keep it for later on. Just in case we still need it down the road.
